Does anyone have VNC working on an Android phone using both WiFi and the Cloud

Sun Aug 27, 2017 10:25 pm

I have been struggling with this for over 2 months now, in that I cannot get the Cloud side to work.
It works perfectly over Wi-Fi and I have had it running via the Cloud previously but since my Android phone needed to go for repair, only the Wi-Fi side works.
Help please!

I have to make a few assumptions: you're using RealVNC server on the Pi, RealVNC client on the phone and with the 'Cloud' you mean RealVNC Connect...

Both local and remote connections are working fine from my Android phone.
Does the remote connection show in the list when you start the client on the phone?

Does it work from other computers?

@DirkS
Thank you for your reply. Sorry for the lack of information in my earlier post.

Your assumptions are correct.
On the Android phone, I have 2 options to select from: either 'Address Book' or 'David's Team'
Address Book works fine on WiFi and shows the 3 currently connected Pi's. This is the same when using VNC from a Windows 10 PC, connected to the same WiFi Network.
However 'David's Team', that I used to connect via the Cloud before my phone went for repair just reports:
No Computers. There aren't any computers in the team at present.

That is the problem, how do I get the 3 Pi's to show up in there. I had this working perfectly before my Phone went for repair but I don't know how I managed to do it previously.

I'd log into realvnc website to "manage my connections." or whatever it's called - and verify that your 3 computers all exist as part of davids team. Then I'd sign out on my phone and sign back in. if that fails, id' uninstall then reinstall the client.

@ElEscalador
Thank you. I have signed into the RealVNC website and all my Pi's are shown in David's Team.

I can't help thinking that the step I am missing is the one that 'authorises' my Android phone to access the Pi's over the Cloud. I have no trouble trying to connect via the Android App, when on my home Wi-Fi (where the Pi's and my Android are on the same network) but I cannot see a way of signing out of it using Wi-Fi any more than I think I had to sign into it to get it working in the first place.

When you say the 'client', do you mean the VNC Viewer - Remote Desktop App that I downloaded from the Play Store?

Yes, by client I mean the viewer app. It's odd that it's not visible - just from your phone but from other vnc viewer devices it's all good? And the options in each of the pi's you want to view are set to "listen for cloud connections"? I'd definitely uninstall/reinstall that viewer app then sign it into david's team.

@ElEscalador
Just to be clear. The Pi's are only visible using machines that are on my Wi-Fi system.
For me, this is either the Android Phone or a Windows 10 PC.

In the case of both the Android phone and the W10 PC, the Pi's are only visible in the 'Address Book' tab, not 'David's Team' whereas until my phone went for repair, they appeared in both.

The Pi's have not been changed since the phone repair, so the settings on them are exactly as they were before.

Gotcha. I have no idea how the phone repair could have interrupted yyoiur connection with the external PC, but once before I had to go to "manage computers" on the BBC website, kick off every single one then reboot and sign them back in.

@ElEscalador
Fixed it!!!
Thank you so much for your support today. It was your final comment about removing and re-loading that persuaded me to try just that.

I have been put off from removing the App (client) completely, because with all the failures I have been experiencing, I had not tried that before for fear of losing the WiFi ability that I did have.

I now have all my Pi's listed and usable, in both the 'Address Book' and 'David's Team'.

Thanks again,
