Raspbian Stretch: Wifi not starting on boot

I just installed the latest Stretch lite image: 2017-08-16-raspbian-stretch-lite.zip on a RPi3. I'm attempting to use the built in Wifi.

From what I can tell wpa_supplicant is NOT successfully being started on boot which results in the wlan0 not working. That said, I don't see anything in dmesg or /var/log/messages.

If I login at the console and execute:

sudo wpa_supplicant -Dnl80211 -iwlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

Then wlan0 works until the next reboot.

I tried:

systemctl enable wpa_supplicant.service

but that didn't make a difference.

Any thoughts on how to make this work after a reboot? Any sense why:

sudo ifup wlan0 results in:

ifup: unknown interface wlan0

I don't understand the wpa_supplicant subsystem at all but here is a workaround to my issue:

Rather than run the generic wpa_supplicant.service I am now running the interface specific version.

Here are the commands I used:

sudo cp wpa_supplicant.conf wpa_supplicant-wlan0.conf
sudo systemctl disable wpa_supplicant.service
systemctl enable wpa_supplicant@wlan0.service

After this I now have Wifi working across reboots. With any luck someone with actual knowledge will fill in some of the blanks.

BTW, sudo ifup wlan0 still returns ifup: unknown interface wlan0.

Ugh.

I've been fighting this all evening. My solution on a fresh Raspbian Lite install:

Make sure your wpa_supplicant.conf is in place then do

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
and add

Code: Select all

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
    wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
to the end of the file. Then do

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl enable wpa_supplicant.service
Then reboot.

I've not tried Strech yet but I did read that networking interface names have changed (default at least).
So wlan0 possibly no longer correct until you made you edits.

I just double-checked my fix with a brand new install of Raspbian Lite Stretch, and it works with wlan0 as the interface name. In fact, you don't even need to perform the 'sudo systemctl enable wpa_supplicant.service' step. I've not seen any evidence of the new 'predictable' interface names, but it may be different on an install of full Raspbian.

NB: I'm not certain this is the "correct" way to fix the problem, however it's simple, clean, and is easily reversible.

Would be interesting to figure out why this happens. Everything is working as expected for me, so steps to reproduce the issue would be useful.

What is the output of 'apt-cache policy dhcpcd5' and just 'apt-cache policy'?

In an upgrade from Jessie to Stretch, one of my Raspberry Pis had /etc/network/interfaces ending at the

line: no iface lines at all. Manually edited it, and it's happy now.

That's intended. dhcpcd should start wpa_supplicant itself.

Either way, wifi didn't work until I put back all the lines that had previously been in the /etc/network/interfaces file.

Yes, interfaces.d should be empty as well.

If placing 'ssh' and 'wpa_supplicant.conf' on /boot isn't working for you, could you please post the full output of 'sudo journalctl' and 'cat /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf' (with your password hidden).

Okay. Solved it. Running sudo journalctl on a completely fresh install of Raspbian Stretch Lite on a Pi Zero W gave me the information I needed:

Yup, failing predictable interface names are a known issue and the next image will disable them by default.

Is everybody else who is seeing the issue missing the "ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant" line?

no i I have the line but my wifi is not working on reboot. I was working (once). To confirm my wpa_supplicant.conf starts

"country=AU
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1"

I changed nothing, rebooted and now no connection (I was able to access it on SSH from my mac). What else can I check?

Run this:
sudo -i
cd /etc/wpa_supplicant
wpa_passphrase SSIDgoeshere passwordgoeshere >> wpa_supplicant.conf
exit


With your SSID and your password. The two angle brackets (>>) are crucial as that means append the results to the file.

Hi everyone,

initially I had the exact same issue. I'm working with a headless configuration and was writing the wpa_supplicant.conf to the boot partition so it's taken into account on startup. However, on Jessie you could set up the file with just the result of the wpa_passphrase command. This doesn't work anymore with Stretch.

Reading the comments above, by simply adding the wpa_passphrase result to the default wpa_supplicant.conf, it worked. One has just to be careful when working a headless configuration :)

so my /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf file now looks like this:

I'm starting it using the serial cable. so, to start use a linux friendly editor (on Windows use Notepad++) and append the following two lines
/boot/config.txt

I also had issues with networking with the new stretch however it can be fixed.

First of all you need to realise the naming conventions for network interfaces has now changed. No longer can you use eth0, wlan0 or with an external wireless wlan1. I understand the reason for this has something to do with network collisions, but may have that wrong.

A friend of mine noticed the problem early on Lewis Cowles has posted a fix on gist as yet this is not an official fix but it does work. https://gist.github.com/Lewiscowles1986 ... 0adfe04cdb

The changed file applies to the following

/usr/lib/dhcpcd5/dhcpd

please copy old dhcpd file before editing if you have no network and have know way to paste the above you will need to use nano thus:

sudo nano /usr/lib/dhcpcd5/dhcpd

This at least this gets ethernet working

/etc/networks/interfaces file will also need editing with this

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet manual

This is the same as previous and seems to contradict what I said above, all I can say is that it worked if some has the correct entries for this file given the changes please post.

I have wireless working also this was a little more complicated than usual and I am not ready to post details at this time as I am not sure of the steps when I do I will post.

I ran into the same problem after a fresh install of Raspbian Stretch on a Pi 2. Everything was pristine:
  • /etc/network/interfaces is mostly empty
  • /etc/network/interfaces.d is empty as well
  • ifconfig shows that wlan has been renamed to wlx******
  • /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf contains the necessary headers

  • I appended my wifi network to /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
The issue is wpa_supplicant wasn't started at all. There's no trace of it in /var/log/syslog or journalctl. From a previous post in this thread I learned that wpa_supplicant is now supposed to be started by dhcpcd. After some digging, I found out that for some weird reason, my wireless interface was not detected as wireless by dhcpcd when it executed dhcpcd-run-hooks. So I appended a simple workaround to the end of /etc/dhcpcd.conf to force it:

The last line was needed for my RTL8188EUS based wifi adapter. Otherwise I get error "nl80211: Driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands". It may not be necessary for other wifi adapters, but shouldn't hurt either.

Now everything works after a reboot. Hope this helps.

So a pretty painful experience but WiFi for my PiZeroW is working now. It would be good for the foundation to update their guides, or update the image.

Lots of conflicting information out there - this worked for me as of 11th Sep 2017 using a brand new install of Raspbian Stretch Lite (image 2017-08-16).

For others benefit:

Need to add the top 3 extra lines to /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf in addition to your wifi network details. My country is Australia, hence the AU.

This got me going on dhcp.

ifconfig wlan0 works fine.

I also went with a static IP address as per the instructions from https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/q ... ress#37921
However if you disable the DHCP client daemon and switch to standard Debian networking as per the instructions it DOES NOT work. Works fine by just editing /etc/dhcpcd.conf.

I also ran an upgrade from Jessie on another PiZeroW that had been working fine and I had no issues, again on a static IP address.

I can confirm that with the latest Raspbian Lite Stretch image, all that is needed to get wifi to work on boot is put a wpa_supplicant.conf file in /boot with the aforementioned 3 lines and your network configuration. That, plus the ssh file to enable ssh, allowed me to ssh into my pi with the fresh image.
