Adding A DVD Player to my raspberry Pi

Wed Aug 02, 2017 7:35 pm

Hello RP Community,

I'm looking into adding a dvd player/drive to my raspberry pi,
The problem is I don't have any experience in this area of DvDs with Pi,
If anyone has done this before, I'd really appreciate any recommendation on certain devices, and the process how you did it.

Thank you so much,

Donni

You just plug it in?
Is there some type of app?

APP ? that is for Android OS ?

Linux will just recognise as a Drive, whether or not it can play content depends on the file format !

The drive you listed is not externally powered...

The Raspberry Pi is Hardware.

Raspbian Jessie with Desktop Operating System includes the cli omxplayer, if need a GUI then see kweb:

omx can play most formats...though if the content is DRM it may not play.

For a DVD you will need an MPEG2 license

What does the MPEG2 license do?

if you wish to play movies that are on a DVD then omxplayer will need a mpeg2 codec to play them in hardware,
if you just want a dvd to read data then no problem plug in and go ...

Ah I understand,
Also, why does it need external power supply?
Can't the raspberry pi power it?

The power supply might not be able to provide and amperage needed and if it can the Pi's USB port cannot handle that amperage. Get a powered hub and connect the DVD drive through the hub. Make sure you provide a power supply for the hub.

The RPi 3B can supply a maximum of 1.2mA in total (the USB Ports are not individually limited) from all 4 USB Ports, though it should be "theoretically" sufficient, but when an Optical Drive spins-up it can draw more power than the USB can supply:

I am using my RPI 4 (4 g ram) as a desktop.

I would like to be able to use a dvd / cd player so I can listen to music and watch videos.

I am looking at CD/ DVD units but they all get their power from USB (USB 3).

My RPI 4 will do USB 3 but my concern is that I don't think the PI can power the CD/DVD player.

I do have an older hub that is powered but it is USB 2 at best not 3.

Any thoughts - any solutions?

Thank you

A DVD player or even a bluray player does not require the bandwidth of usb3 and will work just fine with usb2
