I am unable to install Raspian on a microsd card

Mon Jul 31, 2017 6:04 pm

I got a 64 GB Micro SD card and when I tried to burn the image, etcher said it was corrupt. So I contacted customer support for San Disk and got a replacement. I tried it again and the same message came up. I would like to know if I am doing something wrong and how to get Raspian on my card.

Thanks,

Test the uSD out before you try to burn it. H2testw (Windows/Mac) or f3read/write (Linux) both are free utilities for checking out SD cards. If the uSD checks out, be sure to read the instructions carefully before burning and be sure your download's sha1sum is the same as what is published on the Raspbian download site (underneath the actual download file). Keep in mind that Raspberrypi's sha1sum is performed on the zipped file, not the actual image. The uSD should be preformatted to FAT32 or exFAT in the case of very large cards. Select the latest Raspbian rather than NOOBs or Raspbian Lite for download. Be sure you select the correct target for Etcher. Are you using the latest version of Etcher? Also, be sure your uSD-USB adapter is good and that the uSD card is correctly inserted... you won't be able to run the test programs if the uSD is not connected properly.

A corrupt image file has nothing to do with the SD card.

Hi.

If your downloaded image file is corrupt you need to download a fresh copy of the image file and try again.

It should not be pre-formatted. Any formatting or partitions are immediately overwritten and lost, so it is 100% pointless (just wears out the card for no reason!).

The card slot you use for writing the card needs to be SDHC compatible -- older card readers are often not compatible.

Maybe unnecessary or maybe not...and uSD cards aren't that fragile unless you are doing it every day or careless about shutdown procedure. I have been burned enough times not doing it that I do so regardless of what the "experts" might say. It could be superstition too but a lot of times, especially with cards that don't seem to want to boot, starting over with a new partition table will get them going again.

It may (though I suspect it is superstition).
But if you subsequently overwrite that "new partition table" with a Raspbian image (.img file) including its own pre-formatted partitions, what is the point?

I suggest some research on what "formatting" actually does ...
And what copying an image on to a raw disk really does.

This ^

Download the image again and compare the SHA1 hash to verify your download.
