If your Mac is running x86-64 OS X / macOS you can use Etcher to create a Raspbian Jessie with Desktop SD Card (Etcher both unzips and 'burns' image), you will need a SDHC compliant Internal or USB Card Reader:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/

https://etcher.io/

You will need to enable SSH by following instructions here:

Presuming your Mac is connected to your Router by Wireless and the Raspberry Pi by Ethernet Cable, you need to set up Connection Sharing:

https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18704

Pop the SD Card in the Raspberry Pi and apply power, you should be able to SSH into the Raspberry Pi from the Terminal !
