Live Two-Way Permanent Audio Video Chat Conference

Sat Jul 08, 2017 10:51 pm

Hello,

We have been trying all week to create a two-way, live audio/video link such as in a video chat or conference. This will be a permanent installation so are hoping for a permanent (or semi-permanent) two way live feed between two raspberry pis's.

We have tried a number of different tutorials published throughout the years and was hoping for some advice seeing we are deep in the rabbit hole and have lost our way. We are looking from the simplest solution with the least latency.

We tried:

uv4l seems complicated. does it require using webrtc? we don't really want to view on a webpage or through a webpage. just a straight one-to-one av connection. is this possible? how might we do this?

ffmpeg piped from raspivid was our first choice but ffmpeg is NOT included in apt and must be compiled? i saw precompiled versions but what one?

avconv had a tutorial but in the comments no one said it worked for them.

Suggestions? Thanks for tips!

I can hardly think of an easier way than UV4L. Read this introduction and download this prebuilt image:

http://www.linux-projects.org/rpi-video ... e-demo-os/

install it on the two raspberry pi and interconnect them according to the instructions. there is no need of any browser on the rpis, as the direct access to the hardware (display and speakers), so I do not know what you mean with "view on a webpage" (a browser is usually required if you also want to interconnect one or more PCs)

Time requred: 30 seconds. (a few moucse clicks)

No. https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/ ... +Telephony

But, as you don't need the PBX switching stuff and Asterisk doesn't help with the core issues you'll face, I'd say that it is not the place to start.

Before I go too far down an unfamiliar path...would the UV4L approach:

http://www.linux-projects.org/rpi-video ... e-demo-os/

support a totally self-contained solution of connecting several stations for a group chat without any internet or wifi connectivity at all? My concept is to connect several audio headsets (USB gaming type), each with USB connection to it's RPi, then network the RPis together via Cat5 cables a switch. Reiterate that I cannot use wifi or be connected to the internet.

I am way out of my element here, but have an energent need. Any advice is vastly appreciated.

Did you get anything working in regard to this? My employer is talking about setting up a dedicated (permanent) two-way link with a live video feed between our production facility in another state and the IT/support offices here. He would like to have the capability to press a button on either end to ring some kind of bell or tone on the other end to get someone's attention when needed and have another button to turn on a remote-audio feed. (conceivably, this could also unmute a dedicated feed, but it seems silly to stream audio when it's not 'on' It's probably not a bad idea to also have some kind of tally light when the audio is 'on' at the other end so people don't feel like it's being used to spy on them without them knowing)

The goal is to make the people in both locations feel more connected to the other facility and to reduce resistance to communicating back-and-forth.

Any suggestions on how to implement such a dedicated system on pi (or any other platform) appreciated.

Bonjour.

I was wondering if MEGRIMM (July 8, 2017) has been able to implement his idea of a "Live Two-Way Permanent Audio Video Chat Conference".

Also, I want to let you know that I was looking for implementing the very same kind of application, in a completely different context :
My daughter is disabled and can't use her hands, and can't speak. (I will spare you the details). Nevertheless, for the last 9 years, I spent a couple of hours every week over the phone in order to keep in touch. What can I do over the phone with a mute person that can't answer... I sing and tell stories.

For some time now, I was thinking of implementing such kind of video link in order to have a visual, and to have a better audio too (hand-free phone is not great..)

The need expressed by TREII28 (6 November, 2019) is very close to what I have in mind.

My project would look like this : a colour display, (not a touch screen), a camera, a microphone, and finally, a big mushroom button to initiate a connexion request, or to start-up of the connexion (or the entire RPi). No need to let it run while she is in school and me at work...)

I will let you know of my progress and, as I am new to this, please, your input would be totaly welcome.

Sincerely.
