Power cut, now a dead Pi

Sat Jul 08, 2017 3:22 am

Had the headless Pi going when the power cut out, then resumed within seconds.
Next day noticed no lights are showing. Disconnected the power, waited a while. then powered it up.
Still no lights, no light on the network cable connection and a screen that shows nothing but the board under the CPU feels warm.
No hope?

Get a new SDCard and a USB SDCard reader.

Build a copy of NOOBS 2.4.2 or Raspbian Jessie 2017-07-05 on that new SDCard. Boot your system from that SDCard.
Insert your broken SDCard in the USB reader, insert the USB reader in your RPi.

Open an LXTerminal window and run the following
sudo -i
for i in /dev/sda*; do umount $i; fsck -f -y $i; done
poweroff

Swap the old SDcard back and carry on.

Great, I thought it was with the calculators in Silicon Heaven.
Not too worried about my sdcard contents as I use the Pi as a Linux learning box so I will rebuild the card. I was trying to install Seafile though to make a networked drop box last night. Should be quite useful.

There's no such place as Silicon Heaven.

If you have no lights showing on the Pi (which model?) the PSU may have died. Alternatively there may have been a spike in voltage that hurt the Pi. Try another power supply. If that doesn't work it may be that the fuse on the Pi has "blown" and will need up to 24 hours rest without power to reset.

You should at least (on any Pi other than a Zero) see the red PWR LED lit.

Thanks. Saw different views on the polyfuse and how long before it takes to recrystallize. Will put it in the fridge for a day - if that doesn't do it. I have eliminated one more solution.
Meanwhile I reformatted my sdcard with a clean install but no change.
I did have my screen and computer on the same power strip but only the Pi died.

cooling a polyfuse does NOT help to recover it more quickly, quite the contrary in fact, normally it takes less than 48H, but if there is a short on the board, it will just re-blow.
A PI won't die from just a power cut, in that case it would be just your SD-card that got scrambled by the power loss.
However a nearby lightening strike could have damaged your PI, and that seems to have been happening.
Perhaps its just the over voltage protector diode that has given the ghost, (and now shorts out the 5V supply) its a large black device near the micro-USB port on the underside of the board, if that gets hot it has been damaged trying to protect the rest of the PI from voltages much larger than the chips can handle (>6 Volt).
IMHO you need to buy a new PI.
You will also need a new power supply as this one might be damaged as well.

I reburnt the SDcard using Win32DiskImager and it reported success. The files on the card look correct so I think I have eliminated the card.
Not suggesting the power cut caused it - the power cut is what I observed. A lightning strike is certainly possible - they are very common where I live.
Not sure whether the fridge is a good idea but at least I will be reminded next time I get a a beer. Plugging it on now showed a red light which dies after a few seconds so maybe progress. I was prepared to bin it yesterday - now I will give it a few days.
Most likely to be shorted out though......
