Wifi issues

Thu Sep 27, 2012 2:20 pm

Right! So first off, today I received all the things I needed to get my Pi up and running. And it is! :D I'm running the Raspbian hard-float version.

My problem is this: I can't get my D-link DWA-140 to work. I bought this USB dongle because it was on the list of dongles that worked. Well, problem is I got the DWA-140 B3, the site only listed B1 and 2 as working. I didn't know the one I bought was B3, but what can you do.

The second problem I have, is that I can't connect to the net via ethernet cable, the simple reason for that being that the router is situated on the floor above me, and belongs to the landlord. I only get wifi access.

What I've tried:
I downloaded the firmware that was supposed to work for this chipset, and installed it (using a USB thumbdrive.)

I downloaded the wpa_supplicant and installed that, also using the USB thumbdrive.

I downloaded the driver from D-link's website, but I can't make/install it because I don't have the right headers, and I can't download them since I don't have internet.

iwconfig shows no wireless extensions, however the device itself shows up on lsusb.

Any help would be appreciated, I think I've run out of google-fu at this point.

Bump.

I'm also getting the "could not get status from wpa_supplicant" message in the WPA GUI, if that is relevant at all.

Can you talk to you landlord and get permission to haul the rig up to his place wire it in long enough to get the software you need? You might even get your landlord interested in getting his own Pi...

I could try, but he's practically never home...

Is it possible to share the connection from Ubuntu desktop or Xubuntu netbook with my Pi? Via ethernet.
