Optimal GPU mem for RPi 3 (gaming, 1080p)

Sun May 28, 2017 7:28 pm

With my testing value 256 made 1080p playback more smooth, with 128 it was stuttering too much, 512 caused small lags with other usage with desktop.

What values you are using for gaming and 1080p videos? I heard some retropie users are using value 320, but I think I need study more this.

Geez just release RPi 4 already with 2gb ram, so no need to think things like this, insta 1024 gpu mem.

You don't need more than 256 MB for GPU for either gamming ou 1080p video. More than that doesn't improve performance, in the matter of fact it may get worst, since the more memory for GPU, less RAM memory will be availble for aplications.

The only time I saw that would need more than 256 MB for the GPU, is with Kodi, using a very heavy custom skin. If you don't use Kodi, you can even set it to 160, and you will still be able to watch 1080p videos in omxplayer or Chromium, if they are coded with a hardware acelerated codec supported by the Pi of course.
