USB Error

Thu May 04, 2017 7:03 pm

Every time I start up my pi, it displays this error:

1.480895] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
1.770933] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
2.240926] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
2.591090] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
3.300939] usb 1-1: device not accepting address 4, error -71
4.140919] usb 1-1: device not accepting address 5, error -71
4.150927] usb usb1-port1: unable to enumerate USB device

My mouse and keyboard obviously don't work because of this error. This is wierd because everything was working fine on the pi, then when I started it up again, it showed me this error. I didn't change or do anything with the pi. If someone could help that would be great.

More often than not, those errors are due to a weedy power supply or a cruddy cable between the power supply and your RPi along with too many USB devices pulling too much current.

The thing is, I started up the raspberry pi with no usbs hooked up to see what would happen, and it was still giving me that error.

The LAN controller is a USB device. So the assumption of weedy power or cruddy cable tends to become more of a reality than a theory.

One that can reliably deliver 5V @ 2.4A from your power supply without a voltage drop.
You also need a power supply that reliably supplies 5V @ 2.4A.

No naked RPi model released so far needs a supply that can deliver 2.4 amps. But it is wise to have the extra available if the addition of power hungry USB peripheral(s) is a possibility.

As Dougie might say: "No-one ever got fired for choosing a 2.4 amp PSU." :)

Hi, I got the type of power supply you guys recommended but I am still getting the same error. If someone could again help me with this that would be great.

It's time to spend somewhere between £5 and £35 for a new RPi to replace your broken one.

What do you think could be wrong with the pi?

It looks like you've blown up the SMSC9514 chip which runs the ethernet and USB interfaces.

What do you think could have caused that? Also I appreciate your help.
