Kernel upgrade but no version change

Thu Apr 13, 2017 5:31 pm

Yesterday I ran apt-get update/upgrade and noticed that the bootloader and kernel were upgraded. Thinking this was a clue that a reboot would be required to run the new upgrades, I rebooted but found no change in the kernel (still at 4.4.50, #970 Feb.20). I tried apt-get dist-upgrade, rebooted and no change in kernel.

Shouldn't an upgraded kernel result in a version change?

It would appear it was actually GPU firmware update in Raspbian Jessie with Pixel

There's been some interesting bugs with the firmware recently. Running on the rpi-update versions (because I know what I'm doing and know how to recover things when they break) there's been a couple of times when my original RPi Z wouldn't boot. I suspect the recent apt-get update which kept the 4.4.50 #970 kernel was to catch up with the more critical ones of those.
