connect Pi3 / PiZero to a 2.5A

Thu Apr 13, 2017 3:06 am

Hi,

What happen if I connect a Pi3 / PiZero / PiZeroW to a 2.5A (or more) power source?

Is there a risk of damage for my Pi?

Regards,

You should learn some basic electricity theory.
The most important leg of a three legged stool is the one that's missing.
It's called thinking. Why don't you try it sometime?

In principle, it doesn't matter how much current the PSU can supply (and I'll get to the reason why the principle doesn't always apply in a minute). What matters is: Can the PSU maintain proper voltage at a given current load. What you *don't* want to do is provide too much voltage. That *will* destroy your Pi(s).

As for current.... When operating normally, devices will only draw as much current as they need, up to the point that the on board power protection cuts in due to overload condition or electrical fault. Note that the Pi0/Pi0W do not have such protection. *If* a fault occurs and it causes a short circuit, it is possible--briefly--to pull more current than the wire traces on the board can handle. In the vernacular, that will "let the magic smoke out". You will have a fried board. Thus, it is desirable to limit the PSU to something close to the maximum rating of a given device. Where a Pi3B is rated for 2.4A, a 3A PSU is perfectly reasonable. A 100A PSU is not.

Very little risk. That PSU is perfect for normal use with any model of pi.

The "official" PSU for the Pi is 2.5A.

and of course its fine for all the Pi models you mention.
Its actually a very good PSU with a thick (18AWG) cable.
