Parts needed for design project?

Tue Apr 04, 2017 9:57 pm

Hi all!
I am a design student and normally don't do anything with electronics. However, for this project I'm currently working on I need to make the following happen:

A motion sensor that triggers a motor to spin a cylinder to a certain point (not a full rotation) and also trigger two different LEDs.

I am thinking I need a stepper motor, a proximity sensor, a battery pack, (it needs to be powered internally) and one of the Raspberry Pi starter kits?
My biggest questions currently in figuring all of this out are understanding the power supplies and what the Pi can or cannot power. Any help and or suggestions on what to use would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
before the PSU's and other kit can be defined you'll need to advise on the load, ie how much the cylinder weighs. If we are talking about a cardboard tube for example, then you could get away with driving a servo, rather that a stepper motor. For the motion sensor, there are plenty of examples of the pi using a PIR sensor on the net or this forum.

It's a 3d printed part, so very light weight plastic! And only 2 inches in diameter.
And awesome, I will look around for those.

Consider using limit switches to control the rotation.
