HDMI output not compatible with monitor

Mon Mar 27, 2017 4:21 am

It was disappointing to discover that my EBay ordered DVI to HDMI lead doesn't work with my Raspberry Pi after impatiently waiting for it to arrive. The lead and the monitor are both OK because the combination does work with an old laptop that I was given but not with another device that has a HDMI output. I understand that there are multiple HDMI standards. Of course I can use my Raspberry Pi with the TV but it's a bit inconvenient.

So how can I use my monitor? It does have a VGA input so I could take a punt and order another lead or perhaps there's an option hidden away within the Raspberry Pi that will will make the monitor and Raspberry Pi compatible with each other? That doesn't seem very likely.

I had a look at the config options after posting my plea for help. I tried "config_hdmi_boost=4" and "hdmi_force_hotplug=1". Neither helped. I cannot see anything else that might help.

The monitor should tell your Pi what it needs to configure it. For some reason that doesn't seem to be working, so we'll need the monitor's specs to help. But first, let's get some of the basics out of the way. Are you turning on the DVI monitor BEFORE booting up the Pi? Do you have the monitor set to the correct input?

Monitor make and model?

Monitor resolution and refresh rate (if it's something other than the standard 60HZ)?

Info on the HDMI>DVI adapter you are using?

Does the monitor give you any error messages?

Do you know how to use SSH, and can you SSH into your Pi?

config_hdmi_boost defaults to 5 now, so try a larger number if you think it is a signal strength problem (7-11).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Thank you HawaiianPi for your reply.

Problem solved, a bit of finger trouble on my part. I confused my Raspberry Pi 2 with my raspberry Pi 3 and became confused with which config file was which. I need to mark the cards.

Anyway the simple answer is comment out "hdmi_drive=2".

I also have "config_hdmi_boost=4 and "config_hdmi_force_hotplug=1". I'm going to test to see if they are necessary or not.
