pi0W adafruit ws2811 library

Wed Mar 22, 2017 1:24 am

Hi all,

I'm trying to run a string of WS2811 LEDs from a Pi0W. I've installed Adafruit's neopixel library but I've hit an issue that's got me stuck.

having completed the install instructions I have run strandtest.py but got the following error:

Code: Select all

Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "strandtest.py", line 83, in <module>
        strip.begin()
    File "build/bdist.linux-armv61/egg/neopixel.py", line 115, in begin
RuntimeError: ws2811_init failed with code -3 (Hardware revision is not supported)
I modified the rpihw.c file to include the Pi0W and it still fails with the same reason.

Code: Select all

    {
        .hwver  = 0x9000c1,
        .type = RPI_HWVER_TYPE_PI1,
        .periph_base = PERIPH_BASE_RPI,
        .videocore_base = VIDEOCORE_BASE_RPI,
        .desc = "Pi Zero W v1.1",
    },
enough for tonight (errmm, this morning) I'm off to bed.

Code: Select all

Re: pi0W adafruit ws2811 library

Wed Mar 22, 2017 11:06 pm

well, I'm not sure what I did wrong but Gadgetoid's patch (which looks the same as mine to me) works.

To download it to your pi0w follow the standard adafruit instructions but change the git clone command to clone Gadgetoid's patch:

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/Gadgetoid/rpi_ws281x.git --branch patch-4 --singlebranch
I then renamed the "patch-4" folder to rpi_ws281x to follow the remaining instructions (I'm sure that the git clone command is capable of re-naming while cloning but I haven't bothered googling how.

I'm sure that Adafruit will merge this patch into their repository eventually, Gadgetoid sent a pull request 23 days ago.
