[Pi Zero W]Wifi Device wlan0 not found at all

Fri Mar 17, 2017 11:20 am

Hello!
I bought a Pi Zero W and the most important think is the wifi.
However it can't find the Wifi device wlan0/wlan1 at all:
Scanning with "iwlist wlan0 scan" says that it doesn't support scanning.
ifup wlan0 just says no such device

dmesg | grep wifi gives no result, dmesg | grep wlan same.

I'm using latest RASPBIAN JESSIE from 2017-03-02. I first tried raspbian jessie lite with the same result.
I also updated the firmware with rpi-update, nothing changed.
All packages are up2date

How could you run rpi-update with having an active network?

I'm having exactly the same problem. I got the board from CanaKit and I've double checked everything I can think of, including inspecting the board to make sure it matches images of the Raspberry Pi Zero W that are on this site. So, I'm reasonably sure I don't have a counterfeit board.

I've consulted half-a-dozen tutorials and checked everything the recommended and can't find what's causing the problem. I've tried several different power supplies, just in case power wasn't adequate. (They were all 2+ Amp power supplies sold by Adafruit for the rpi.) I've tried standing on one foot and booting at midnight when the moon was full, all to no avail.

I'm a reasonably savvy person with years of experience with linux, the raspberry pi, and microcontrollers. Usually, I can figure out what's wrong or I'm able to find another post that has the same problem and some answers, but so far that hasn't been the case.

I'll be happy to post whatever additional information you might think is helpful.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Ray

You just sound like me :D
It seems that the board is too new to find everything on the Internet.
Maybe there is some ID mismatch that the kernel thinks it's a Zero and doesn't initialize any firmware for the wifi ic?

Your first moves should be to check that you've got a RPiZW

cat /sys/firmware/devicetree/base/model
ifconfig -a
iwlist wlan0 scan

Then check your credentials in your /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf file

Code: Select all

country=GB
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
        ssid="BTWi-fi"
        psk="SomeSecretPasswordHere"
}

cat /sys/firmware/devicetree/base/model
ifconfig -a
iwlist wlan0 scan
So there is the problem:

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ cat /sys/firmware/devicetree/base/model
Raspberry Pi Model B Rev 2
Forcing it to be a RPiZW enables only the ACT-LED however wifi is still not working
config.txt before any dtparam/dtoverlay line:

Code: Select all

device_tree=bcm2708-rpi-0-w.dtb

What on earth are you doing hijacking this thread? You don't even have a Pi Zero with WiFi.

After triple or quadruple checking, I decided to download and try the latest Jessie Lite, dated 3-2-2017. Now, when I run ifconfig and iwconfig, wlan0 is showing up. So at least that part is now fine. Let's hope I can go farther w/o messing it all up. :)

I Have the same Problem.
I have tried to Install Jessie on my new raspberry pi zero w, but the wifi is not working.
ifconfig only shows the loopback device. In the Logfiles I do not see the wifi device firmware being loaded.

If I check the device Model it seem that the board is being recognized as a Raspberry Pi Model B rev 2.

The SD card i have created for the zero works fine in my Raspberry Pi 3 and connects to my WLAN network.

To solve the Problem I have tried several SD Cards, Jessie Lite and Complete, Downloaded The Firmware with different browser and copied the firmere to the SD Card wit Etcher and dd command on my Mac.

So far I am not able to get the Zero working with Bluetooth and Wifi.

The result of cat /sys/firmware/devicetree/base/model for me is "Raspberry Pi ? Rev 1.1" which seems strange!

That means your SDCard has a version of Raspbian that is too old for your shiny new Raspberry.

Download NOOBS 2.3 or Raspbian 2017-03-02 and try again.

Please Consider making a sticky post regarding this issue.
Like others, I have owned and used many Raspberry Pi's for several years. I attempted to setup my Zero W the same way I set up several standard zero's - by first setting up the sd card on a Pi3 first. Unfortunately, like others here, the Zero W claims it doesn't have a wireless interface. It isn't about the /etc/network/interfaces or the wpa_supplicant.conf since those were properly created on the Pi3. After finally stumbling upon this thread, I entered the command: "cat /sys/firmware/devicetree/base/model" to discover my Pi Zero W thinks it is a "Raspberry Pi ? Rev 1.1".
This was all done using the most recent version of Raspbian (mar 2).
I'm currently running an apt-get upgrade which has been going for a while. Hopefully when that is done and rebooted, the Zero W will finally find the wireless interface.
Please, Please Please, add a sticky at the top of the forum to help others!

Follow-up:
The upgrade solved the issue for me.
For anyone else who stumbles on this thread, even with March 2, 2017 version of Raspbian, you may need to do an upgrade to get wireless working. That means you will need to have another way of getting a network connection to do it from the Zero. Don't know in retrospect whether doing the upgrade from the Pi3 first would have done the trick since it would have detected different hardware.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

I am still not able to use the wifi on my raspberry.
I have downloaded the file

Code: Select all

But still the wifi is not found.

Try a better power supply. Try using a cable between your power supply and Raspberry that isn't so thin that it's about as useful as a wet piece of string.

I have already tried different power supply's, cable and SD cards.

In the same setting and with the same SD card my raspberry pi 3 works fine and connects to the wireless lan.

It appears some Pi Zero Ws escaped the factory without the correct programming.

Very very very new to all of this Pi stuff but I think I'm suffering the same problem as my 0W cant see any WiFi...

I'll do what I can with the posts you've all put up but slightly daunted by the prospect of it all..

Hi guys,

I have a similar issue with my zero W.

ifconfig give me

Code: Select all

ifconfig

The wireless is detected and on, but It doesn't connect.

My wpa_supplicant.conf looks like this, am I missing something simple?

Code: Select all

country=US
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
        ssid="Netgear16"
        psk="password"
}

I have set up previous pi's, I just seem to be struggling with the new one for some reason.

Thanks for your help!
