Relays Arduino Raspberry Pi Compatible

Tue Mar 14, 2017 3:33 am

Basic question, seems obvious, but I've been wrong before.

Will relays advertised for Arduinos compatible with Raspberry Pis?

I don't want to waste any money while I'm learning this stuff.

Thanks.

Some but not all, Arduino operates with 5V GPIO pins, Raspberry PI uses 3V3.
Some of the relay boards will accept a 3v3 high signal, other boards will need something closer to the 5V.

Hi.

when looking for relay boards look for ones that have optoisolators on the control input side, you have more chance of these working with your pi GPIO.
as an example this one has optoisolators and claims compatibility with 3.3v inputs

Hey! Thanks for the response.

So, are you indirectly saying that those with the "optoisolators on the control input side" are preferred rather than incompatible?

I know that the Arduino's have female pins opening for the GPIO and RP's have the male.

My mind naturally gravitates to the idea that they are compatible. I may be wrong.

Yes those with optoisolators have a better chance of working with the Pi , but you should look for ones specifying 3.3v compatibility,
the type of connection male/female has no real significance on the operating voltage compatibility.
