New RPi now lost mouse/USB etc?

Tue Sep 18, 2012 5:45 pm

In Short: I have had the Pi for less than a week. I have used it twice successfully, but now on booting it starts up but the mouse and keyboard are dead. Help?

Nothing was changed between when it was working and now. On booting the red light is on and the green light above it, that's all. I think I recall more lights coming on before this problem.

Background...I managed to get the wheezy file onto a card and booted the machine ok and set it to start the graphical interface upon booting. I booted the machine a couple of times on this occasion.

2nd day looked at the machine a little - scratch and browser. Noticed no sound coming through the HDMI linked TV. So tried to find the my WD NAS to pull an audio/video file, but upon clicking on the windows share icon got a "its not mounted" error so was stuck. It was booted successfully 3-4 times on this occasion.

Spent a few hours trying to work out these two issues by reading online the main PC over the next few days then today had time to try a solution to these issues. However upon booting I had no mouse functionality. (Am using a logitech wireless), So I found another wireless set and that didn't work either. So I tested the original mouse/keyboard on my pc - both worked fine. Then I took a wired mouse and keyboard and started the Pi with these, same error, no response. I noticed the wired optical mouse had no red light on so thought it must be a problem with the Pi and came online to find help.

Things tried: I have read lots of stuff online where the power supply is mentioned. The supply I am using says "output 5.0v =0.7A". I even put the Pi in the fridge for half an hour then tested it again (v odd advice), no change.

Have a basic multimeter (analogue display) which took the needle directly to 5.0v when testing TP1 - TP2 as suggested on one site.

No new software has been installed (don't even know how to do that) or changes made to the Pi/Wheezy SD card.

What I don't understand is why it worked and now does not. Nothing's changed in the set up, would trying to connect to the LAN be an issue? I turned it off once by unplugging it rather than clicking on shutdown - would that be an issue? But I think that it worked ok after that and it seems unlikely.

Please help - Linux knowledge = ZERO (hence the purchase). Some general computing understanding (from my BBCmicro days). Excuse the full story but I don't know what is relevant or not.

Can you clarify that the RPi is booting and gives output to your display.

It is possible that pulling the power plug has corrupted some files on the SD card. Unless you have put/generated files on the SD card which you would regret losing, I'd be inclined to try re-writing an OS to the SD card.

It does boot (I think normally). I see a multicoloured screen (4:3 ratio) then lots of text with Oks then the desktop with a large raspberry with the mouse icon stuck in the middle. Whilst booting the ACT light is green. The PWR light is red throughout. The other 3 lights never come on.

Just did that - the Pi now booted to the Wheezy initial setup menu and I could not proceed any further as I could not use the keyboard to select a menu item. Situation unchanged.

Hi,

If you getting weird results i would almost always look at the power supply and rule that out.

Try a different plug... I got intermittent results using a power supply that put out less than 1a.

Got a response from the Farnell14 guys who said it is a dead one so it is going back. Thanks for the feedback though.

I have the updates and wheezy from this morning 9/21.

from a power off condition, if I let the RPI boot entirely, the wireless keyboard (with integrated touch pad) dont work.

If during the scrolling of the boot mesgs, etc. I press any key, the keyboard works fine.

anyone else having this issue?

I'm in the same situation with you, had the raspberry pi for less than a week when this happened. (I think it coincided with installing the latest firmware version, but I'm not certain, reverting to older OS-image didn't help either).

I think I lost the usb ports and ethernet, as I can't see the raspberry pi connecting to my router when powered up. I did try all my usb power supplies, and I'm not sure if any of them are high class (I get a TP1-TP2 voltage around 4.7-4.8V), but it worked powered straight from my usb hub before, so I don't understand what could have changed with that. I also emailed farnell now about a replacement, going and spending money on a new power supply at this point wouldn't seem logical as the setup worked before without problems.

My raspberry pi is of the new Made in the UK -batch, with what I think is the manufacturing date 29/08. If there are others with similar problems, it would be interesting to know if it's one of the new ones.

My Pi was not a UK one - made in China, and you have had the same issue as me. I received this information from Farnell regarding my Pi when I was returning it...
It looks like your Pi is faulty. There are some issues with one of the chips - IC3 - which runs the USB and Ethernet connections, but the wired optical mouse not having its LED lit is the real giveway for this. There are two on board PTC fuses, F1 and F2 near the LEDs on the Pi, these limit the port current from the supply. These self recover if you power down, but repeated overcurrent won't help.
Like you my ethernet and USB went dead after a couple of days.

Looks like I've got the same problem here too. I've never seen any life from the USB ports, or a link light on the network switch. I too will have to now email the supplier for a replacement. I hope I don't have to wait the 13 or 14 weeks it took for for this one to turn up. I hope this is all worth the wait...??

1 psp power supply 5V 2.5A
2 keyboard a microsoft wired 600 (supported) and another no name
1 hub usb Trust pyramid 4 port usb 5V 1A
monitor with rca (no hdmi)
3 sd card san disk 2Gb 8 Gb 16 Gb
with any combinations of this device even with only networ and ssh enable after few minutes raspbarry pi crash the ethernet connection and usb connection.
i see that with htc power supply i have in normal status 4.65 V betwen Tp1 and Tp2 and in crash status voltage grows to 4.98 V
with psp power supply i have 4.86 V in normal status betwen Tp1 and Tp2 and in crash status i ahve 5.30 V
i have to resend back?
