Ubuntu MATE will not boot

Sat Mar 11, 2017 4:37 pm

Had the Pi 3 for around 2 weeks now, no problems so far :D

Thought I would try Ubuntu MATE, and I have downloaded the image and written it to a new SD card. The SD card was formatted using SD Formatter, and the image was written using Win32DiskImager both running on a Windows 10 PC. The SHA checksum of the downloaded image checks out OK.

The problem is that there is no activity from the Pi when it is booted with MATE SD card inserted, not even a green SD activity light just does nothing.

When I inserted the MATE card into a PC running Linux Mint, that does not seem to be able to read it either, would have thought it would have been able to. I know this is a good SD card because it had Rasbian installed on it previously. :o

Any ideas?

Was it an Ubuntu Mate designed for the raspberry PI? Any X86 OS will not work on the PI.
I think you tried to install a normal (x86) UBUNTU MATE.

There seems to be an Ubuntu version for the PI, but have never heard of an Ubuntu MATE for the PI.
may be mistaken though.

Ubuntu isn't an official RPF OS, but a community supported OS.
It doesn't have a section here but list under "Other OS", I've moved your post there as it where people go to who know about ubuntu on a PI.

1. There is no need to format a card if you will be writing an OS image to it.

2. There is no downloadable image for Ubuntu Mate. The download is a compressed version. Did you extract the img file before writing with Win32DiskImager?

What is this then? :) It is even linked from https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

A community supported effort I had never tried before...
You are still better off with Raspbian IMHO.

And make sure you get the 16.04.2 LTS release as that is the only one that has a version for RPi2/3.

It depends on which operating system you are running on the pc you are using to image the SD card.

Instructions for linux and windows are here : https://ubuntu-mate.org/raspberry-pi/

basically.
down load image file
expand ( unzip ) it
then use which ever method you prefer to white the image to the SD card also dependant on OS running on PC
