Usb port advice.

So, the project I am working on has already claimed the life of one raspberry pi 3 model b+ when I stupidly attempted to remove one of the dual usb towers. The reason I wanted to do that was because I am soldering a wired xbox 360 controller directly to the board and that would mean the ports would be taking up valuable space up in the case. I dont want to risk breaking another pi so any suggestions as to other ways I could solder the controller to the pi or remove just the top usb port would be great.

You could just solder the wires to the pads (circuit board) under the port without removing it. Just tape over it so nothing else gets plugged into it. You'll only have issues if two devices are connected to the same port. You don't have to remove it, unless you have clearance issues.

I like this idea, but I feel like tape would look ugly and would fall off over time. I'm looking for a more permanent solutio.

Whilst I have a thread already open about USB ports, I might as well ask another question.

On the 2-high usb slots, which slot corresponds to which points?

If you have an ohm meter trace one of the DATA pins. I think you'll find the ones closest to the edge of the board go to the bottom one. And the second set back go to the top one.
