Dongle for Headless use?

I am looking for set up a few Pi's headless, planning on using Raspbian. Any thoughts on these Dongles (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FL ... g=bgsco-20)?

I've used them on Mac Mini's and they work fine. Wondering if anyone here has used something like this with the Pi?

Are they necessary?

If you force HDMI mode in the config won't it create the HDMI output regardless of whether there is an HDMI monitor detected? (thus obviating the need for an HDMI spoofer).
