Hdmi to Dvi adaptor not working on my monitor

Mon Feb 20, 2017 8:09 pm

Hi Everyone,a total Noob with the Raspberry pi.
I have bought a pi3 to try and setup a arcade console for my grandson,I have everything working via my hd tv,but when I plug the pi3 via hdmi to dvi adaptor into the old Benq FP73G S 1024X768 60hz monitor I just get a error OUT OF RANGE.
I do not know how to chnge the pi3 resolution to suit the monitor, plus I am not sure how to edit any config files with the fear of bricking the pi3.

I hope someone will have come accross this problem and have a simple NOOB guide for me to follow.

Thanks

Please reply ASAP.

What OS is installed?
Make sure the monitor is turned on before the RPi.
Do you have temporary access to another monitor?
You can't 'brick' a RPi. If you mess up your OS so it does not boot then you just wipe the card and reinstall the OS again.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Thankyou for you repky, I will check this out, I only have other VGA monitor's and dont have Hmdi to VGA Adaptor to try them.The OS is Retropie,so maybe this monit will not work as I was going to build a simple bartop for my Grandson and both the pi and monitor would be powered on at the same time.
The monitor screen flickers also with out of range error.

Thankyou so much for helping me.

I would suggest to seek help for config issues from the Retropie web site and forums: https://retropie.org.uk/

Is the error displayed on your Pi or the monitor?
Plug the monitor into another computer and test. Then use the adapter and test. DVI has several variations as do HDMI a dn HDMI cables. You might have a bad combination.

The error is displayed on the monitor saying that the pi resolution is out of range fo suit the monitor.

I have ordered a hdmi to vga adaptor to test on another monitor,I will post back when I try it.

Hi guys thanks for all your help.

did you ever watched the config.txt documentation
take a look to section HDMI_DRIVE, HDMI_GROUP, HDMI_MODE (DMT)
e.g. for 1024x768 @ 60Hz:

Code: Select all

hdmi_drive=1
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=16
can you see the NOOBS user interface when you boot on your 1024x768 monitor?
{ I only give negative feedback }
RPi B (256MB), B (512MB), B+, ZeroW; 2B; 3B, 3B+; 4B (4GB)

Hi Thanks for the reply, I see I made a NOOB mistake I edited the config.txt with those settings but never took the hashtag from the front of the line.
I just bought a Hdmi to VGA adaptop with sound I will see how that works later and post back result.

Cheers to all you guys for the support.

Your settings worked, Got another vga monitor and was able to set the resolution to max for the monitor 1280x1024 with adding mode 35 ,eerything works perfect on retropie but when i open kodi its gives the error out of range for monitor.I remember Kodi resolution was set to 1080p,is there some wat I can edit Kodi config down to suit the monitor 1280x1024.
Kodi is built into my retropie image.
I hope these makes sence.

Cheers.
