Touchscreen display and HDMI monitor

Wed Feb 15, 2017 1:23 pm

I have just got a 7" touchscreen display.
Once I have set this up with my pi 2, will I still be able to connect a normal monitor and keyboard to the pi 2 or will one of the screens then not work?

Any advice would be good.
Thanks.

The HDMI display is normally disabled when the DSI 7" display is detected.

At least on the 4.9 kernel, using the vc4-kms-v3d overlay should support both HDMI and DSI connections at the same time. I didn't try messing around with the configuration very much, but I had dual screens working as extended-displays (not sure about mirroring). I tested it with LXDE, Pixel (IIRC) and Weston (weston-launch). There are some known (text/image quality and flickering) issues for DSI with the vc4-kms-v3d overlay. Another smaller issue is that it doesn't seem possible to rotate the console in an ideal way (at least for now). So if you normally use lcd_rotate=2 (not supported with vc4-kms-v3d) for the DSI touch display, you'll have the console on HDMI right side up and the console on DSI upside down. vc4-fkms-v3d does not support DSI and HDMI at the same time.

/home/pi/.config/autostart/lxrandr-autostart.desktop:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=LXRandR autostart
Comment=Start xrandr with settings done in LXRandR
Exec=sh -c 'xrandr --output Composite-1 --off --output HDMI-1 --mode 640x480 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output DSI-1 --mode 800x480 --pos 640x0 --rotate inverted'
OnlyShowIn=LXDE

/boot/cmdline.txt:

Code: Select all

/boot/config.txt (vc4-kms-v3d enabled):

The biggest problem with that is that vc4-fkms-v3d is NOT READY for prime-time. It's still very much experimental.

Thanks.
If HDMI is normally disabled on detection of DSI 7" display, is it easy to change a setting to "enable" so that I do not have to keep disconnecting the DSI if I want to use a full size monitor?

You can try adding ignore_lcd=1 to config.txt

Yes, but it's not really worth using it that way at this point in time.

1. That is not the Official 7" DSI Touch Display
2. They are not using a VC4 overlay.

What is your point?

ya true its not for Official 7" DSI Touch Display. Im asking whether we can achieve this type of the extended display, and earlier you mentioned {Yes, but it's not really worth using it that way at this point in time}. can i know y

I mentioned why it's not worth using it in my first post in this thread. To get the DSI touch display and another HDMI display working at the same time, you need to use the vc4-kms-v3d overlay and currently using that overlay with the DSI touch display results in a flickering picture, poor text/image/anti-aliasing quality on the DSI screen while the HDMI screen will look good. I also mentioned another smaller issue, but you can go back and read that if you are interested.

I'm not sure why Dougie felt the need to provide "definitive" answers to questions on a topic with which he apparently lacks experience. You'll have to ask him.

Ah ha, finally we've found the expert that knows. This piece of information has been carefully hidden from the whole population of Official RPF 7" screen users for too long.

I've not yet even thought of using that vc4-kms-v3d stuff because it appears to be too experimental for general use.

So the definitive answer is "This is not possible with stock standard, fully supported, generally available firmware."

I don't understand why you posted this link. It's the GitHub repo for a kernel build script that supports three devices which have a RockChip RK3188 SoC -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockchip#RK31xx_series.
Current Devices supported:

Tronsmart MK908
Tronsmart T428
Imito QX-1
Those are Android TV stick/box devices. Do you have a question about those devices?

I'm aware of the various partially-working Android builds for Pi. Do you have a question?

Rekindling this old debate:

1. I believe that the Noobs install does run both displays. The Img install does not.

Why do I think this? I did Noobs yesterday and today I did the img install using balenaEtcher.

I might be mistaken.... :lol:
