is it safe to use 5V 1A power supply ?

Tue Feb 14, 2017 7:52 pm

hei, i'm new with RPi, so i wanna build cluster, but i heard using power supply less that 2A is not recomended.
is it true ?

is it true ?
Which model Pi? And how many in a cluster?
For the Pi 3 it's recommended 2.5A, to cover powering connected usb devices, but running headless in a cluster it could get by with less. In contrast a Pi Zero could run off 500mAh of a powered usb port.

The raspberry 5.1V 2.5A power supply has no problems to feed a headless Pi3 with 4x Pi Zero on a Clusterhat.

I'm not sure if I would risk that.
Intelligent IC and output compensation
Smart charging, amazing experience
Built-in intelligent IC ensures excellent performance and recognizes all kinds of 5V devices to deliver ideal current of up to 2.4A; improve output voltage when current is more than 1A to compensate the loss. Being tested, output efficiency of smart charging port is better than 80% products on the market, safe, smart and energy-efficient.
I'm not sure what they mean by "improve output voltage" but I suspect that it means that they increase the voltage, if that increase takes it above 5.25V you will start having problems with your Pi.
something like this might be better

it's hard to find 2A for each port in Indonesia, if i can find it, it will cost me more than $40..
do you alternative USB hub for cluster ??for indonesia market..
sorry for my bad english.

okay, i find someting interesting this http://www.orico.cc/goods.php?id=4879..
on web, they said outputs is 5V and 2.4A for each port..
what do you thing ??should i buy it ??

That one certainly looks nice, but I couldn't find anything on the site about how much it costs or how to order one. Do you know where the company is based?

5V6A 30watts
That's total, so if you use 4 Pi3's then only 1.5Amp each.
You might get away with it, or it might work with only 3 plugged in.
Should work with 2 Pi3's.

Depends what's plugged into the 3's and what code they are running

For what it is worth, I think 1.5A for a Pi3 is quite sufficient if there are no (non-trivial) USB peripherals attached. Most text I've read so far talks in terms of "Well, of course, you're going to have a few things, like a hard disk and what not attached, so you will need at least a 2.5A power supply".

Keyboard and mouse are "trivial".

I've powered my Pi3 off a 1A USB PowerPack.
It was fine, didn't blow up.

All that happens is it may run out of the ability to deliver enough current if you start adding lots of bits and bobs to it and so just not work/work well.

MY Pi2 with GPS modules, Sense Hat, monitor, WiFi, keyboard and mouse has not got near that yet.
My Pi3 was only a fraction more and was never a problem.

Of course it's the quality of the PowerPack/PSU to keep the 5V when pulling the higher current. And PowerPack may vary.
The only way to know is to try it with what you use.
If you can get higher, then get them.

Both of my 2.4A power adapters can maintain 5.3v if I put a solid 2A resister load on them. According to this very through video review, the voltage does go up the more you draw to compensate for the loss from connectors and cable lengths. It looks pretty well made assuming one can get a authentic unit for a reasonable price.
