USB and ethernet doesn't work

Fri Sep 14, 2012 6:01 pm

At first, sorry for my english. I`m German.

How I said it in the topic, no USB port either ethernet work. I booted "wheezy" and plugged in my usb keyboard but no response. I also tried other keyboards but they also didn't work. First I thought it was the PSU but my PSU brings 830mA. I also used my brothers PSU with 1A but the problem still existed. So I read in the Raspberry Pi wiki that the clock from the USB/Ethernet chip maybe doesn`t work. So I downloaded "berryboot" to check the internet connection. But it said that no ethernet connection is available.

Did I anything wrong or is the Raspberry Pi broken ?
Thank you for your help.

If you connect your Pi to the network, can you see if it gets a DHCP address on your router ?

My router doesn`t recognize a new device when I connect the Raspberry Pi to the Internet and start "berryboot".

I also plug an usb stick into one usb port and the light from the usb stick was for 1 sec on but then it goes out and never goes on again.

Same issue here. I recently received the new board (with the two mounting holes).
I created a SD-card and powered up the raspberry with ethernet and keyboard connected.
It was running smoothly; network and keyboard worked out-of-the-box.

The next day I powered-up the raspberry and both the USB-keyboard and the network do not function anymore. The three LEDs indicating a network link remain off.
I have tried other power-supplies, cables and other images, but it doesn't work anymore.

Is there a diagnostics-image available, or any way to troubleshoot this issue? I'm rather new with the raspberry, but very familiar with Linux ;-)

All logfiles (/var/log/messages; syslog etc.) look 'normal' to me. No errors there.

Ok, I already read the troubleshooting forum page and that says: "and the solution was to reflow the solder on the 25 MHz crystal "X1" on the bottom side of the board". What does that mean ?
Do I have to remove the X1 crystal and after that I put it back to the RPi ?

Can anyone explain it to me ?

You don't need to take it off. You just need to add a little solder to the 4 pin's at the edge of the crystal. You will need some very thin solder and a very thin tip on your solder iron. Also be very carefull not to touch C41 and C51 which are in very close range of the crystal. You don't want to resolder such a component. If you never soldered before, ask someone with experience to do the job for you.
Note that soldering to the board will void your warranty. If it still doesn't work afterwards, you can't return it anymore. It's a 35 euro risk you are taking.

Thanks for your reply. I know the risk. But I can't give it back. And I know some people that are really good in that.

Thank you again.
