I've downloaded and extracted the img and tried to put it directly onto the card, but it seems I can't because of the partitions NOOBS has set up. I'd rather not use a different SD.
I saw mentioned somewhere that I could install it by putting it on a flashdrive. Any tips?
You can't add images to an existing NOOBs install without wiping the card and starting over.
Read the Kali web site/forums to find out how to install the image.
Likely the Kali image needs to be written with a copy utility such as Win32diskimager or similar bit copy software. The contents of the card will be lost.
I would suggest to get another SD card(s) to install another OS.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.
