Torubles installing Raspbian

I'm sorry to ask this, because there sure is some topic somewhere about this question but I couldn't find it. I followed the guide from the homepage https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... s/linux.md on how to install a raspbian image on a SD card.
But when I follow all the instructions and insert the SD card to my PI nothing happens.I don't know why it doesn't work. What format should the SD card have before copying the image? Does it even matter? How can I find out what is wrong?

'Flashing' an image to the card is totally destructive of all prior content and formatting, so the previous format of the card is irrelevant.
