Trouble configuring HDMI Desktop with PiTFT on Pi3B

Thu Nov 10, 2016 10:35 pm

I'm a complete noob and I've gotten pretty far into my setup before hitting a brick wall. I started with Jessie with Pixel and installed the drivers per the Adafruit DIY instructions. On a Pi3B with the 2.8-inch resistive display, I'm wanting to send the desktop output to the HDMI and (am hoping) I can use pygame or something else to direct other output to the PiTFT. I could use some feedback on what to use, but first, my problem needs to be addressed.

I'm able to ssh in but I was wanting to get the console display moved from the PiTFT to the HDMI. I followed the Adafruit Boot to X Windows on PiTFT but substituted /dev/fb0 for the fb1 in the directions. When I got to the raspi-config step, I selected a desktop choice. Now, whenever I try to boot it up, the desktop display goes to the right device, but I get a login panel. If I enter an incorrect password, it indicates that. A correct password entry is followed by a black screen with a pointer cursor and then the splash image is drawn along with the login dialog. It's as though there's an error being logged someplace, but I don't know where to look for it. Choosing the raspi-config setting for "desktop with password" or "desktop automatically logged in as pi user" still requires the password entry either way and the result is always black-screen sequence I have described.

I'm not sure what diagnostic information to post, but I'm happy to add whatever anyone thinks would be helpful to resolve this.
