Ethernet to Wifi

Wed Sep 05, 2012 6:53 am

Hello,

I was taking a look at Model B of Raspberry Pi and had a question regarding the RJ45 ethernet port. Would it be possible to directly connect an external ethernet-to-wifi adapter, so that I can transmit/receive data wirelessly? If not, how do I transmit/receive data wirelessly?
Btw, the wireless protocol that I was hoping to work with is the 802.11 a/n (5.0 GHz)
Thanks!! :)

Yes , if those things are already available for the 5 GHz band.
Cannot remember seeing one though.

I only prefer working with the 5 GHz band. It is perfectly all right for me to work with the 2.4 GHz band as well. I'm not sure which of these would yield better options.

You would want something like ebay item 221103404955.

These particular ones can be set up only from a windows PC though.

However my advice currently is to avoid all forms of wifi dongle and use an access point in client mode. These are driverless and can be set from their web interface.

New or used they start from very low prices these days.

Hi,

My goal is to try and connect the Raspberry Pi to the wireless network. I might have understood this wrong, but if I connect a WAP to the Raspberry Pi, wouldn't that defeat the purpose since I would essentially be creating a wifi network?

You can use a WAP (Router) as WiFi-to-Ethernet adapter .
Mine from AVM does so (albeit a bit slow) - at the same time it works as WiFi repeater.
Configuration and DHCP is handled by the other router (also AVM) connected to the Net.

Hi ghans,

You're right. However, I need an Ethernet-to-wifi adapter, not the other way around. This is because the Raspberry Pi comes with the RJ45 ethernet port. For this purpose, I was looking at the item: http://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Universal- ... B004UAKCS6.

Do you think this would do the job for me?
Thanks!

Of course this is bidirectional  ... always methinks.

I cannot say anything about the IOGEAR thing , but it looks suitable.
Perhaps have a closer look at the customer reviews .
It should come with its own power-supply !

If an AP can be set-up for "Client Mode," and most can, it works just like a dongle. This one on the bay does 221057613108. Why not look at a second hand one to save even more?

If you go shopping for an AP check its spec that it can do "client mode."
My network upstairs is bridged to the downstairs one just like this. The AP runs off a network switch in "Client Mode" and so upstairs is on the network and can get to the router.

That probably works too. But you will need a usb-to-miniUSB cable for the power, and the lan cable, so it will be a few more $ than the unit only. And if you dont have a powered USB hub to get power from, you will need a separate powersupply with USB output as well.

I have tested the Vonets adapter (as the ebay item refered to byy TheCaptain above), and I know that it works great. I used it earlier for my dreambox and now on macmini/morphos. It also have the lan and powercable that comes with the adaptor. The power supply cable is also fitted with a 5V adaptor so that it can take power from an usb plug or from a standard 5V powersupply. (same plug as most D-link powersupplies use.)
The Vonets is also on amazon, and a bit cheaper than on the ebay listing above.

But if your ok with connecting to 2.5Ghz, why not use a usb wifi adapter instead?
You will avoid having the dongle attached to your Pi, and dont have to worry about the powersupply.
This one from dealextreme does work with the guide for adding adaptors with RTL8188CUS chipset, and it costs less than wifi bridges. It also works be used directly on the Pi usb ports. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/48166
Only issue with dealextreme is that the delivery usually takes a couple of weeks, so if youre in a hurry you might find somewhere else to buy adapter with the same chipset.
