Chromium performance Raspi 2

Sat Oct 29, 2016 8:35 pm

I'm seeing poor (ish) performance of Chromium on my Raspi 2. I did take out the extension that killed ads, but that's the only change I've made. I'm not running multiple tabs - i see the cpu utilization get up to the high 80s often, and even pegged out at 100%. Is there something wrong with my Pi or is this the norm?

If so, I'm looking forward to Raspi 4. :)

What websites? And why did you remove the ad blocker? That speeds up websites as well.

Websites: www.wired.com is a good example. I see my utilization go up to between 50 and 75% on that site. Even this one, as I type to post this message is showing between 30 and 45% utilization (on that little graph in the upper right on the tool bar).

If I start a term and look at top, with just this tab active in chromium, I see two processes taking most of the time, both Chromium. One is taking 100 to 117% of the cpu and the other taking 5 to 13%. Perhaps the 117% is multiple threads in that Chromium process, but I'm guessing.

If I open a second tab and go to wired.com the overall utilization goes up to 70%+. I see three Chromium processes, 180, 100 and 15%. (180 + 100 + 15)/4 = 74 .... close enough).

Adblocker: I removed the adblocker because it was showing up on Chrome on my Windows PC and many of the sites I went to were not happy with the ad blocker. Some actually failing in peculiar ways. So I removed it. I suppose I could sign out of Chromium and re-install the ad-blocker. But someone will have to tell me which adblocker came with Jessie/Chromium. I failed to notice as I removed it.

V51: Yes, I am using version 51 of Chromium. Are you suggesting there is another version that performs better?

On a Pi2 that is around the norm. The Pi3 performs a bit better. The ad blocker was uBlock Origin BTW. You could still use Epiphany, but it is very buggy and unstable.

Thanks for the reply. I'll look forward to raspi 4. Hopefully it will have a good bump in memory and speed.
