Is there a supported way of upgrading Ubuntu firmware/kernel

Wed Oct 26, 2016 8:36 am

I have 2 Ubuntu installations Ubuntu MATE running 4.4.11-v7+, which is running well, and I intend to keep as 16.04 LTS.

I recently downloaded Ubuntu Server Standard 16.04 from https://ubuntu-pi-flavour-maker.org/ . This is using 4.1.19-v7+, and I am having some problems with the inbuilt WiFi. I wondered if some of the firmware updates might help, but there seems to be no supported method of doing this.

I have learnt the hard way not to do dist-upgrade (it seems to work for Rasbpian, but not Ubuntu).

The recommended method seems to be rpi-update, but I have had unfortunate experiences with this, and heed the warning "In normal circumstances there is NEVER a need to run rpi-update as it always gets you to the leading edge firmware and kernel and because that may be a testing version it could leave your RPi unbootable". viewtopic.php?p=916911#p916911

Go to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-pi-flavour-maker/ and register a bug. Go and ask them for a kernel upgrade with the Dirty COW patch. That should force them to build 4.4.27 for you.
