Powering Hats and Raspberry Pi

Tue Oct 25, 2016 9:35 pm

Hi guys!
I'm making my first serious robot project with Raspberry Pi 3. I already know how it will work and almost everything is fine. However, I've got a problem with powering. I'm using Adafruit Servo Hat, Adafruit Motor Hat and of course RPi 3. On the Adafruit's sites about those two Hats I'm using, is written that they gives a lot of noise in the power supply and it is highly recommended to power RPi from a different power supply. But I really want to use only one power supply and that's the problem. My question is that are there any elecronic components that could do this without damaging RPi and Hats? Maybe 5V 3A UBEC could solve it? I want to power those 2 hats and RPi from 7,4V 14A LiPo battery.
Thank you for all your replies

I too would like to power my servos through the Pi Hat. I currently have 8 thirsty servos running at 6-7.4 Volts, with max amperage draw of 2.5 amps each.

My understanding, is if I run through the Pi Hat, the max voltage I can feed is 6 volts .

I too was thinking of powering using 7.4 volt Lipos. The UBEC you cited, can it only handle 3 AMPS?

I am currently powering my servos outside of the Pi Hat (using the hat only for signal and ground). 2 servos per one 7.4 LiPo. It works okay, but it entails a lot of cutting and soldering.

Have you found any useful posts on the topic?

Thanks

Thank you for reply.

Your servos requires 2,5 A per each. So 2,5 x 8 servos=20A. I think you should use LiPo 7,4V battery that can deliver 20A or more. I think you can plug to the LiPo eight 5V 3A UBECs, each one to power one servo.
And have you got an idea to power from the same power supply the RPi with the stable voltage?
Thanks

Every thing I have read suggests that I should use a separate power supply for the R Pi itself.
