I am would make a cluster using RPI 3.
But the Ubuntu mate is very slow, and don't using total power of processor.

1) RPi clusters are only useful to learn about clusters
2) RPi's are slow compared to recent PC's
3) You will not get any speed increase in normal Pi apps

Built and configured one of these last night. Now to test, learn and have fun.

As stated before, a raspberry pi cluster will not mine bitcoins or solve the worlds problems very well or fast for that matter. But you can learn the architecture, configuration and administration of a 'cluster' to the point you could apply that knowledge and experience to a career with HPC or HA clusters.

I tested my PI3 using overclock.
I am using the Raspbian lite is very faster than Ubuntu mate.
I create a simple program in java, this program run bigdecimal division and multiplication.
My i7-4990 with ddr3 32gb, the process run in 20 minutes.
My PI3, the same program run in 8:30 hours.
In comparison PI3 is more lazy 25x than my pc.
The cost of PI3 + SD and supply power is similar.
