Built-in Compute Module 3 in monitors

Thu Oct 13, 2016 7:43 pm

Hello forum,

I just found a press release about a built-in CM3 in a monitor on my search of "smart tv":

Are there more RaspberryPi-powered displays like this out there?

Best regards

Jens

That news broke in these fora on Tuesday (11 Oct.). The NEC announcement press conference was on Monday (10 Oct.). The blog entry today (14 Oct.) has Eben Upton giving data on this.

The NEC monitors aren't available yet. The first three models appear to be slated for release beginning in January 2017. Given Eben's remarks, it is unclear to me if the CMIO (carrier) board is a standard feature, or an add-on to the monitors. The CM (which can be a CM1, CM3, or the NEC custom CM3-16) would almost certainly be up to the purchaser to install.

Also note that these monitors are intended for commercial use, not home use. As such, they will probably be rather more expensive than similar sized monitors intended for consumers.

There have been a number of posts in the comment thread to the blog entry about the NEC displays. The situation appears to be as follows:
-Two RJ-45 Ethernet jacks, one for the display electronics and one for the (optional) CM.
-Two exposed USB ports for the CM.
-Display resolution "Full HD", which I would read as 1920x1080.
-CM carrier board is optional. It can be either installed initially or added later.
-CM itself is optional.
-CM3-16 will be available for purchase on its own.
