rPi custom boot screen + auto run

I could use some help. Is there a way to have the rPi boot with a custom image (or animation), and then without showing anything other than this image, run an application? I'd like it all to be as seamless as possible, ie no pre-boot text, no desktop, etc.

Might be worth checking todays blog post, as this is done in the new Pixel desktop.
