TP-Link TL-WN722N Wifi Problems

Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:44 am

Hi All

I got my RPi a couple of days ago and have been itching to get started. After checking the working perpherals list I purchased a TP-Link TL-WN722N.

I've followed instructions and guides from various sources (http://elinux.org/RPi_Peripherals#Wirel ... ebian_6.29) including reading around the forum and still can't seem to make the adapter work :(

I've tried plugging the adapter into a powered USB hub (Xenta 13 USB ) as well as directly into the Pi

Please see files below, any help diagnosing the issue would be really useful.

lsusb & dmesg

The e-Linux link you have may not work as it is out of date - I am in same situation as you so I'm not an expert.

I would suggest you update to the latest firmware using rpi-update.

I can only speak for Debian Wheezy, but I have the TL_WN722N working without any issues. Yes, I have to agree (For Wheezy anyway) that the instructions on elinux are out of date. I went through the steps, and many, if not all of the steps either didn't apply or the software was already installed.

The first thing I would suggest is that you not use the wpa-conf file while troubleshooting because it is a real bear to set up properly, although I do have it working. Put everything in the interfaces file. As a WPA example:

Code: Select all

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
auto wlan0

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid “ENTER SSID HERE”
wpa-psk “ENTER KEY HERE”
The other problem is that the TL_WN722N takes a lot of power and requires that you do one of the following:

1) Find a hub that works with it. Good luck. It appears to be a nightmare trying to find a hub that works with a specific device with the pi from what I gather reading through the forums.

2) Short the USB polyfuses like several have done to get more power to the USB ports. That is something I will be trying in the future, since current shipping pi devices come this way now.

3) Use a Y splitter cable to get power from both usb ports. That is what I am doing now and it works, but that means you need to run headless (preferred method in my case) because all the USB ports will be used up (No keyboard and mouse). I used VNC and the wired internet to set up the wireless connection.

4) Give up and buy another wifi dongle. I also have a Edimax EW-7811UN clone working, but it is not without its own issues. The correct driver is not installed by default and it requires the use of MrEngmans driver, and must be reinstalled occasionally when a new kernel is installed. The good news is that it can be plugged directly into the pi without any power issues.

Im having issues with this module too, although discovered that what is causing misfunction is the keyboard. Tried 2 keyboards with no success. No clue what´s the next step. Im almost buying an edimax module. :(

Hi Guys

Apologies for the lack of update, Just got back from holiday. I just bought an Edimax micro receiver so am hoping will have more luck.

I'm also buying a non-generic USB hub in the hope it helps.

Thanks, Ahmad

I love my TP-Link TL-WN722N so much on the pi, I am ordering a second one for my desktop. It already has excellent gain, but I am even kicking it up a notch more with an external antenna that has double the gain; my pi will be completely encased in a large box with other circuitry, so I need a wired external antenna anyway. Maybe I can buy yours at a discount ! Only kidding, as it would not be worth it with the price of shipping, and the fact that Amazon offers free shipping on Tp-Link.

When you get your Edimax, use Engmanns script unless you want to go through this pain all over again. It worked for me right off the bat, and if you have problems, there is an ongoing thread where he offers assistance.

I used the TL-WN722N on Raspbian and i noticed that the system hangs from time to time, i am using the adapter on a USB Hub which has connected only the Wifi and a HDD and has a 2A power supply.

I let the system on over night and when i came back there was no response and when i rebooted either the Hdd and the adapter wasn't recognized from the system.

Is there anyone experiencing problems like this with this adapter?

At the moment i am using a Asus N10 and it seems to work but i want to use the Tp-Link for my second Raspberry.
