IP Cameras with Raspberry PI

Wed Sep 21, 2016 11:16 pm

Hi Guys just posting here to try and get a suggestion for a project I want to do, ok here it is.

I have a number of IP Cameras, cant remember models but they are Foscam and Tenvis with a total of 6 to be used. What I want to do is have the Raspberry PI be able to record motion from all of these IP Cameras. For the PI I have both the PI 2/3 and will most likely use the 3. Now what are your suggestions for software to use ?

I set up a wireless security camera using an RPi b+ and a webcam using motion and motioneye, motion and motioneye also support ip cams.

Here's a link to my RPi b+ security cam running off a solar chargeable powerbank:

I'm probably going to have to find a better power source and I still need to encrypt my root partition incase someone someone decides to steal my RPi security cam but, ATM it's working, it's running in the pic even.

I'm running arch arm on the RPi security cam and I've installed both motion and motioneye(motioneye so I get a pretty web interface) and samba. I have it setup so all recordings are saved on a samba server running on an odroid-xu4 also running arch arm alsp. All this software is available for raspbian which I plan to switch to soon.

I love arch arm but it's updates have killed my odroid(it was down for a week or two while I waited for a fix), I'm looking to switch to raspbian for more stability on my RPi security cam. I'm probably going to switch to OS on my odroid also to get greater stability. Rolling release is great and all and I love arch but for these sort of always on devices stability is a necessity.

Motion and motioneye support ip cameras and you can run multiple camera from motion also, here's a couple sections from motion's config file:

Code: Select all

# URL to use if you are using a network camera, size will be autodetected (incl http:// ftp:// or file:///)
# Must be a URL that returns single jpeg pictures or a raw mjpeg stream. Default: Not defined
; netcam_url value

# Username and password for network camera (only if required). Default: not defined
# Syntax is user:password
; netcam_userpass value

Code: Select all

##############################################################
# Thread config files - One for each camera.
# Except if only one camera - You only need this config file.
# If you have more than one camera you MUST define one thread
# config file for each camera in addition to this config file.
##############################################################

# Remember: If you have more than one camera you must have one
# thread file for each camera. E.g. 2 cameras requires 3 files:
# This motion.conf file AND thread1.conf and thread2.conf.
# Only put the options that are unique to each camera in the
# thread config files.
; thread /usr/local/etc/thread1.conf
; thread /usr/local/etc/thread2.conf
; thread /usr/local/etc/thread3.conf
; thread /usr/local/etc/thread4.conf

thread thread-1.conf

Have a look at https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneyeos

Fully fledged cctv system which runs on pi and uses motion as background process.
Ive been running this software stable for the past 18 months and it hasnt missed a beat.
