led indicators

Fri Sep 16, 2016 6:19 pm

i did all of this with windows remote desktop and the xrdp server using a pi 3.

i was running a python script through teminal (with the desktop going) on my pi that had been running for nearly 24 hours, and i decided to start minecraft pi, i let my pi sit for a few minutes to get minecraft pi going, i came back to it and found my connection had frozen and then get a message saying the connection was stopped, i tried using my SSH terminal PuTTy to see if i could reboot it, and it wouldn't connect, i looked at my pi and the led's were as follows:
- power was a solid red
- activity was a solid yellow

what does this mean?

The power LED should always be solid red. That indicates that the PSU is connected and supplying adequate power.

The activity LED is the equivalent of the Hard Disk LED on a PC or laptop. It indicates that the SD card is being read or written.

Both of the above have some degree of software drive to them. It is possible that if the RPi has crashed they may be frozen and no longer telling the truth.

interesting that you say that about the power led, cause after raspbian gets booting the power led turns off. thanks though.

That's abnormal behavior. It could well indicate a low-voltage condition, which can easily cause other instabilities. I would use a better power supply and/or power USB cable.

i am using a samsung wall adapter that outputs 5v 2.0 amp, it is the best that i can do with a usb power, i can't find any adapters that will output more than that on 5v. and when i have a screen attached to my pi the video singal regularly quits out and then comes back after a few seconds, i can scource that to low power, although my pi is the only one that seems to do this on 5v 2.0 amp, all the youtube vids that i see people messing around on other pi 3's their screen is perfectly fine, and their using 5v 2.0 amp.

what might be causing this case specific problem? i run in headless mode over ethernet just to keep power consumption to a minimum.

If the power supply is actually capable of 2A at 5v, the next thing to check is the cable between the supply and the Pi. Cheaper cables use Christmas tinsel instead of copper wires, which can significantly drop the voltage. I like to use 5v2 supplies, but a good cable should work (the shorter, the better), again assuming the supply is not lying about its specs.

You don't say where you live...
In the US: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/28-19336
in the UK (with international plug set): http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/plug-in-p ... y/9098135/

Either of those with keep a Pi3B very happy as regards power.
