Pi zero build help please

Thu Sep 15, 2016 1:36 am

Hi everyone. I am planning a mini laptop using a pi zero and a 7'' LCD. I have never used a pi before so I am not sure what parts I will need. I have repaired laptops for a living so should be OK putting it together . Can you guys help me pick the parts please.

Thanks
Dan

Pi zero
microSD card
Display interface board
Display
USB Hub
WIFI dongle
Bluetooth Dongle
USB Ethernet dongle
USB storage media
USB Powerbank

I'd suggest a Pi3 instead of the zero

Pi3 (Ethernet, 4x USB, Wifi and bluetooth on board)
microSD card
Official Raspberry Pi display
USB storage media
USB Powerbank

Thanks for you advice Doug!

Is it a big job to strip the Ethernet port and replace the double stacked usb's with single's to minimise the thickness of the board?

Everything is relative. :)

So it is anywhere between simple and almost impossible (to still have a working RPi after the removals) depending on your skills and available equipment.

It depends on how good you can solder and how good your tools are.
But it shouldn't be to difficult tho.

Reading through the adafruit guide it sounds pretty hard work, Adafruit have since started stocking a solder removal alloy which might make the job easier, basically a low melting point solder which you use to dilute the solder on the board.

If you want a minimum profile device then an A+ with the Pi screen might be OK, I'm just conscious that you will want some connectivity (keyboard, mouse, WIFI, bluetooth, storage media, etc) so again a USB hub + dongles would be needed.

The official Pi screen connects to the display interface (not available on the Pi0) through a small interface board (supplied with the screen).
