Noobs file will not download in Win10

Mon Sep 05, 2016 11:38 pm

After downloading Noobs in Windows 10 it gives an error message that the file is an invalid archived image??? I have tried SD formatter - Windisk 32 and etcher - nothing seems to give me a readable image that I can transfer to my sd card. The pi's shows a steady green LED and monitor says no signal. -
I have combed the web read all the posts and none of the suggestions have helped.
Maybe I am not copying the file compressed zip file to the sd card properely.
Any input would be very appreciated.

The image file must either be unzipped to the Windows computer then copied over to the SD card OR the zipped image can be unzipped directly to the SD card. In no case do you copy the compressed zipped image to the SD card.
If your card is 32GB or larger then be sure to format it FAT32 not EXFAT.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Try installing 7-zip on Win10, that can unzip anything that's a valid zip, gz, xz, rar or tar file.

Yes tried 7-zip still no luck, and yes they were extracted and unzipped. The download will not produce a readable file for NOOBS or Rasbian. With chrome download it just states the file is invalid, With Edge it downloads it but stops have way through and requires a resume download. Neither of the files are readable on the RPi - I tired a different SD card same issue . Very frustrating. For some it is an easy install but for others as I have read on various forums it is a pain in the tukus. As stated earlier on my third Rpi install and it gets harder not easier!

My guess is that your ISP is giving you trouble and your download is not complete and/or corrupt. I had this sort of trouble with my previous ISP. My downloads would just stop short with no indication that anything was wrong. I learned to look at the expected file-size shown by my browser at the beginning of the download and compare that file-size when done. Worked for me most of the time.

If you want to be 100% sure the download is complete and intact then get a SSH-1 checksum utility and use the SSH-1 number which is shown on the download page below the download link. You will need to copy and paste that long number into the utility. Note that you use the utility on the raw zipped image only and not on the unzipped file. This will tell you if the download is complete and correct.

Thanks klricks I will look at SSH-1 checksum utility and yes it will be helpful in determining that the file did not download properly.
ISP could be to blame but there are and have been multiple issues with both NOOBS and Rasbian download to SD card.
RPi team gotta make a more stable version that is easily transferred to the RPi from a SD card even with ISP issues or any other issues. I pity the individual in a remote location that is trying to set up multiple RPi's with the belief that it was an easy install process, which it is not for many. Hate to be critical but of the 10 million RPi's my guess is nine of ten are sitting dormant for this reason and other glitches in set up and fully running.

Tripe and bunkum!

If your ISP cannot transfer data correctly (which is their job), you have far worse problems to worry about.
Its obviously nothing to do with the RPF.
Please check the SHA-1 sum before making silly comments.

What sort of "stable image" do you have in mind that could transfer across the network more reliably?

It may be that a smaller image using better compression (such as xz instead of zip) might help, but Windows users will find that difficult to deal with.

Jahboater I know my song well before I sing it !
Except criticism and the RPi will grow -

Was not a problem with the ISP and I did not suggest that; klirks did. The NOOBS and Raspian downloads are weak to say the least. Hence I gave up on the download and bought the preloaded sd card and I was able to get up and running in no time BUT that Classic RPi issue where it fails to give audio over HDMI. And the sudo raspi-config failed to deliver once again as well as nano.
Did notice that the suggestions on the rasberrypi.org's documentation page on this issue are over a year old if not more. and it is not even clear when it was written.
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... -config.md

I did see a lot PR on the 10 million sales - that does take time so I forgive them for concentrating on what matters to them.

More tripe and bunkum.

The documentation hasn't changed because the process hasn't changed since NOOBS was introduced.
The 10 million sales means that 9,999,999 folks have managed to download an operating system and get their RPi to boot.

Download again, check the sha1sum of the zip file that you download, unzip it (using 7-zip if needed because your Windows version is too old) and follow the published instructions.

http://superuser.com/questions/245775/i ... -windows-7 tells you how to get a sha1sum calculated.

I have to say if you cannot get a single zip file to download you need to try a different method or find what is causing it. (mines errors during download sometimes and there is no resume) but it's a file. It's easy it comes down, the internet has being doing this for ages.
A zip is a well used compressed file container, has been for yonks.
It's not Win10, as I have and can get it.

I would suggest the better way to get large files reliably and has resume is to use the torrent method as this splits it up into parts and everything is 'checked' as it comes.
This would be especially recommended on slow connections.

Etcher should do all the unzipping of the file and transfer for you from the downloaded file, have you set it to validate everything?

Or you could try http://www.pibakery.org I've not yet, but here it is good.
