Using PIA VPN with Pi3 Raspbian/RetroPie-Kodi

Mon Sep 05, 2016 4:22 pm

Hello everyone,

I apologize if this isn't the most accurate area of the forums for this post, but I do hope I wasn't far off.

I am a subscriber to Private Internet Access VPN and I currently use it on Windows 10. I'd like to install it on my Pi3 (I know how to install it) but I'm wondering how I can use it in conjunction with Kodi via RetroPie. By the way, my subscription allows me to use the application on up to 5 devices, so I'm covered there. Now I'm pretty new to Linux and RetroPie so hang in there with me on this one.

I have Raspbian installed as one partition on my 32gb SD card. I installed RetroPie on that same partition. I run RetroPie by killing the GUI and then typing 'emulationstation'.

If I activate PIA VPN and connect to a server, then "kill the GUI" (what's the name of the graphical desktop used in Raspbian?) and THEN run RetroPie -> Kodi, will the VPN be in use? Is this something I would have to setup through the Kodi interface? I've only used Kodi on my Windows machine, I'll be installing it on my RetroPie later today when I mess with this.

Thanks for any information anyone can provide!

I have Kodi ( not retropie )installed on Raspbian with PIA vpn too.
I use this addon:
https://github.com/Zomboided/service.vpn.manager
it works really fine; you can try it and ask questions on this thread http://openelec.tv/forum/unofficial-ope ... or-openvpn

I have my Pi setup with both Kodi and RetroPie, what exactly are you having issues with kodi vpn? I open Kodi and RetroPie using command line, which isnt Ideal but works for what I want it to do.
Another simple guide: https://www.kodivpn.co/

I saw KODI running on Raspberry Pi 2. It has to work on 3. I suggest installing KODI on Amazon TV receiver fire. It comes with the same value, and the remote control actually helps KODI and further more if you are facing any geo restricted issues for downloading your favorite addons on kodi then i will suggest you to use VPN and for this purpose you can suggest this guide: https://www.vpnranks.com/kodi-vpn/

i think most vpns, including pia, don't have addon that can be accessed from within the kodi, so that eliminates the possibility of accessing it through kodi's interface. with that said, you can always configure PIA over your router and that'll not only eliminate the whole process, it'll also eliminate the restriction of 5 connections at a time. i did manage to make it work over openelec like a year ago. i think i used the q/a session in this page along with some some youtube vid to get it right with a bit of trial and error.

Totally agree with you, Most of the VPNs, Including PIA, don't have add-ons that can be accessed from within the Kodi, so that eliminates the possibility of accessing it through Kodi's interface.

I have also faced the same issue few months back, but I found the solution.

Kodi wil work on Pi3 but you will need to get some sort of dedicated graphics in order to use make sure it works smoothly as Kodi is graphic intensive. You can read more about Kodi and VPN at https://switchvpn.net/blog/everything-n ... -vpn-kodi/

I think most VPNs, including pia, don't have the addon that can be accessed from within the Kodi, so that eliminates the possibility of accessing it through Kodi's interface. Well, you can install 123movies Kodi addon for series movies. Though there is no need of any addon as there already many websites for all streaming stuff. You can stream series online on sites listed on the source.

Very possible without bashing commands in via SSH.

Use Zomboided’s VPN manager addon and follow his guides for Linux.

Essentially it’s:

Install OpenVPN
Install VPN Manager
Run through Wizard to setup for PIA
Select whether to auto Connect at start or when addons launched

I had to add some additional commands to the bottom of the OVPN file as had some DNS issues with the latest Raspbian builds but other have reported no issues at all.

Hola if you need help.

Excuse my off-topic question, I see you are aware of Kodi and VPNs.
I`ve already read a lot of information about VPNs for Kodi like this topvpnchoice.com/best-vpns-for-kodi/, but I still can't figure out which one to buy.
Which VPN do you use for Kodi? Share your experience, please.

Not sure why you need the app. I use another PureVPN and simply executing "openvpn <path to .opvn profile>" from the terminal is enough to get going. Check this post out if you need to read more https://www.purevpn.com/blog/kodi-vpn/

I wanted to use some Kodi-addon and I am unable to use any of the Kodi-addons when the VPN is in use. Any Idea what I might have done wrong?

Ps: These are the Kodi addons ( https://techvpn.com/best-kodi-addons/ the first five) That I have on my Fire TV but doesn't seem to work with either OpenVPN or paid VPNs like Pure VPN and Express VPN.
