Is it it possible to send emails without using 3rd party providers
My reason for asking I am going to purchase a basic home automation kit and I want to experiment with sending messages to my smartphone
I have an internet provider

I think it will be much more difficult if you want to avoid 3rd parties completely.
Your phone.. where does it receive the e-mails from ?
Do your ISP provide e-mail adresses ? Many ISP have restrictions on port 25 because if they dont and their customers send a lot of spam-mail they might get blacklisted and no other mailserver will accept mail from them.
