USB-device power consumption

Sun Aug 26, 2012 11:52 am

I'm using an active 4-port USB-hub (Output 5V 1A) that has been modified by cutting the red wire within the hub, to prevent the Pi from powering through the hub.

My keyboard flips out at times when using OpenELEC; As if it had a key pressed down. Afaik this should be a power problem:

In my hub I'm using
this keyboard https://www.modmypi.com/shop/raspberry- ... -UK-layout

this mouse https://www.modmypi.com/shop/raspberry- ... -wired-USB

1x 16gb Verbatim USB 2.0 flash drive
Image
and 1x 8gb USB 2.0 Flash Drive (brand unknown - cheap)

This usb-hub is plugged in one of the usb-ports of the PI and one more 16GB Verbatim Flashdrive is in the other.

Now for the actual question:
How much power do these devices consume? What should I plug in the RPi's secondary Usb-port? Should it be the keyboard or the usb-flashdrive? Shouldnt 1A be enough power for these 4 devices? And how am I supposed to plug a wifi-dongle in that usb-hub if it flips out even with this setup?

Can someone put these devices (Wifi-dongle, Keyboard, Optical mouse, 16gb flashdrive, 8gb flashdrive) in an order of supposed power consumption? Wifi dongle probably consumes the most, but how much do the other devices consume usually?

This is not a power problem.
it happens with nothing plugged in to USB (keyboard via nic)

Power consumption varies a lot for various devices. I grabbed a keyboard off "the pile" and it turned
out it wanted .5A. For a flippin' keyboard??! A lot of devices have no ratings printed on them. 2 wireless
dongles I have use up to 450mA and 500mA. Keyboards and mice are "probably" under 100mA but see above. lsusb -v will tell you what your devices could ask for.
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
When General Failure and Major Disaster get together, Private Parts usually suffers.
