The raspberry pi broke my TV?

Sun Aug 26, 2012 6:22 am

When I first attached the raspberry pi to my TV I had a problem with a red 'snow' appearing on the TV. I think I just rebooted the PI and it went away. BUT then later the red snow appeared once or twice with the pi not connected. Got rid of it by going into menu and out again (on the TV). Then we finally powered off the TV fully for a while. THEN finally the TV is black and won't work.
So, this may have been a coincidence but it does seem unlikely. Most likely explanation is there was too much voltage on the HDMI, it caused a fault in the TV which went on to cause other faults.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
I'm planning to bin that pi and buy a new one and only use it with a less expensive tv!!

As far as I'm aware HDMI is digital and therefore shouldn't suffer from video artefacts normally associated with analogue composite.
It sounds like your TV already had underlying problems even if the PI did somehow manage to fry your HDMI port it's unlikely to completely kill your TV.

I think the red snow could have been caused by incorrect voltage on the hdmi frying something in the tv.
Just off to order my new pi now. I heard there is no waiting list..

NSIS
but
it's pretty unlikely that a new RPi will be any different than an old one,
if you suspect the RPi then doing a RMA will give the manufacturer a device that has may have caused issues
what was the make and model of the TV
does the RPi work with composite output
if you want to pass on the RPi to someone less worrisome then there are several people who would take it off your hands.

I recently had the same issue as to where the screen was snowy in the black regions. Had blue lines and other crazy things each time i rebooted. I found out that it was just my hdmi cord. Swapped it out and now it is fine. Hope this helps!
