Using Android Tablet as screen

Mon Aug 08, 2016 6:16 pm

Hey,
I have just ordered a Raspberry Pi 3 to use as a portable hacking machine. I will be using Kali Linux to use for hacking.
One problem I have came across is a monitor or display to use with the Raspberry Pi. I would like to use my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 as a display and keyboard, whether by cable of using a network. If I was to go with a network solution, I wouldn't want to use any data making a hotspot for the raspberry pi to connect to, or having to set up the Raspberry Pi using a monitor prior to connecting it to the tablet.

What options do I have to use my tablet as a display? I have thought about getting a display but I have seen people using the Android devices as monitors.

Thanks in advance

Run a VNC server on your RPi3 and a viewer on your tablet. There are several servers/viewers available; choose the one that suits you best.

I'm using RealVNC most of the time since it's availabe for all platform: https://www.realvnc.com/download/vnc/

You can either make a connection via WiFi or by using an Ethernet connection (USB Ethernet adapter connected to tablet --> cable --> Rpi3)

If I went with the USB ethernet adapter, would there be a problem with using the adapter on certain devices as it would not work? Also how would you do it with a USB ethernet adapter?

Hi,

you need a USB OTG cable, an USB Ethernet adapter (I have one of these http://www.digitus.info/en/products/net ... to[set]/0/) and a ethernet cable (I have one similar to this http://www.digitus.info/en/products/acc ... -ret-rj45/); also quite handy when traveling.

1. Install vnc server on your RPi (i.e. x11vnc, realvnc server (FOC for up to 5 devices in private use)
2. install vnc viewer on your tablet (play store; search for realvnc)
3. get the IP address of your RPi (ifconfig --> my RPi 3 is 169.254.186.122)
4. connect USB OTG+ethernet adapter to your Android device (FYI: my tablet is Android 5.0) --> Ethernet connection should be detected. Assign static IP (same net as your RPi --> I've used 169.254.186.10), Gatway (169.254.186.1) and DNS1 (255.255.255.0)
5. start vncserver (should be configured to start automatically!) and vncviewer
6. Create a connection in vncviewer for connecting to RPi IP

I assume that you can configure vncserver by your own. If not, search the forum for how-to/examples

EDIT: I'm using the USB ethernet adapter i.e. with my RPi Zeros too. You can use it with every computer ..

I put an x-server program onto my tablet and then exported the display from the raspberry to the tablet. worked great

Hi. I am trying aBUGSworstnightmare solution, but I cannot see how to set a static IP address on my tablet for the ethernet connected to the OTG-USB.

Let me add that I can connect the tablet to the Pi with realVNC over the home wifi, but I would like to use the ethernet cable when away from wifi.

I have also connected my notebook to the Pi with VNC and Ethernet, and running ipconfig on a terminal shows me that the eth0 is connected (autmoatically) to the same network as the VNC server on the Pi shows. Somehow, the tablet cannot do this, and VNC viewer gives me a cannot connetc error. That's why I would like to try and configure IP manually. (Tablet is rooted, and browses the web OK when wifi is off and connected with the ethernet to the home router, automatically).

Please let me know any ideas to try. Thanks.
