Problem with video in VLC [solved]

Tue Jun 28, 2016 1:54 pm

Hi there!

I'm new here and this is my first time using Raspberry Pi. I have a Raspberry Pi Model 3 and I can't watch videos on VLC. I use Raspbian and Lubuntu and I can't do it! I can only watch it with GNOME player

Can anyone tell me what I need to do?

Thanks!

PS: Please explain it very clearly. Thanks :|

VLC can display SD video on the RPi 3, if you select SDL for output.
For HD video you need to compile a version supporting hardware acceleration by the GPU:
viewtopic.php?f=66&t=59814
Minimal Kiosk Browser (kweb)
Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

Just use OMXPlayer. It's built-in to Raspbian and supports the Broadcomm GPU for hardware acceleration.

It is a CLI utility that is normally run from a terminal, but you can set it up to play a video when you double-click on it. Right-click on a video and choose open with, then custom command, and fill it out as follows:
Image
Click on image for full size, then use back to return here.

Enter "omxplayer -b" for command line to execute.
Make sure execute in terminal emulator is checked.
Application name doesn't have to be exactly what I put, but you do need something there for a permanent association.
And finally, check the box for set selected application as the default for this file type.

You might have to do this more than once (once for each type of video, mp4, mkv, etc.).

After that, you just double-click on a video and it will play full screen. Use "q" to quit, and check the --help and man pages for more info on OMXPlayer. You can also do the same for audio files, but those can usually be played with other applications as well (audio is much less hardware intensive than video).

There is also an OMXPlayer GUI you can install (a forum search should find you the info on that).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Hi,

I tried that but I can't see well the subtitles. They have a "ugly" style. That's why I want to have VLC.

Thanks

Did you select the right video output (Openmax IL)?
Do you try to play videos that are not supported by any HW codec? If they play with omxplayer, they should also work with this VLC version.

Openmax IL output in VLC does not output to the window at all; it uses an overlay, just like omxplayer.
Using SDL output (no HW acceleration) does work for SD video on a RPi 3, even for H265 codec.

What's that? Remember that i'm very noob with the Raspberry Pi 3 (this is my first Raspberry Pi)
I don't know if it's related to this

Yes. You must set
gpu_mem=128
in /boot/config.txt

Hi,
gpu_mem was not found on config.txt opened in terminal but I changed it in raspi-config "Advanced options" (Photo attached)
I can't watch any video yet. I can see a big photo of the video but it doesn't continue and I need to press ALT+F2 and put "sudo restart" for take back the control of my Raspberry Pi.

Thanks and sorry for all the problems that I'm causing.

Did you enable the experimental OpenGL driver? (It cannot work with OpenMax)
Did you remove all packages belonging to VLC before running "sudo make install"?

I know. I wrote this guide. But something must have gone wrong.
Did you really uninstall all packages related to VLC before running 'sudo make install'?
And you did not answer my question about the OpenGL driver. A simple check: does omxplayer still work?

Hi,
I think that I've uninstalled all VLC packages but I'll try again later.
Omxplayer works perfectly.

When I play a video with VLC it freeze and I need to restart using the force (disconnecting the usb)

Will that error messages stay when I restart the board?

Thanks

No. And disconnecting power is a bad idea, because it may corrupt the files system on your SD card.
Running nvlc (no interface) from a SSH connection might provide you with a better way of getting error messages. And you might be able to stop execution with CTRL-c and avoid shutting down by disconnecting power.

Hi,

I typed nvlc in SSH and this was the result
[email protected]:/media/pi/TOSHIBA EXT/Amnesia $ nvlc
VLC media player 2.2.4 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.3-37-g888b7e89)
[016b9488] core interface error: no suitable interface module
[0161f8f8] core libvlc error: interface "globalhotkeys, none" initialization failed
[016b95f8] dbus interface error: Failed to connect to the D-Bus session daemon: Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11
[016b95f8] core interface error: no suitable interface module
[0161f8f8] core libvlc error: interface "dbus, none" initialization failed

I don't know if I need to do more things, again, this is my first Raspberry Pi.

Thanks gkreidl
