1st Logon fine, than death!

Tue Aug 21, 2012 5:08 pm

Thank you all for advising me on the choice of keyboard and mouse. I bought both from Tesco and loged on for the first time. It all went well, but I must admit that I was disappointed with the apps. The browser does not support Java, so I could not access any of the web based emails, like Windows Live, Yahoo or Gmail. That means that I cannot access many, probably most of my websites and I cannot receive/send emails. Perhaps there are apps that can be downloaded but there is no package manager and I don't know terminal commands to do that.

However, even bigger problem is that I could not log on at all the second time I tried. I set the config to go to the desktop on log on. Perhaps that was a mistake, because I now have a black screen with just HDMI4, which is the connection I use for Raspberry. Nothing else. There are 2 lights on the "motherboard", PWF on continuously and OK flashing.

Any suggestions, anyone?

Thanks,

Alex

During a first time boot the Linux distro makes many modifications to the SD-card, including to files in the FAT partition. If you do not do a clean shutdown, some of these modifications are not finished, this may leave especially the FAT partition in disarray.

Re-flash the sd-card, boot the PI, then once the PI is fully booted up do a clean shutdown with:
sudo shutdown -h now

or do a startx, then do a shutdown from the GUI.

Thank you mahjongg. I have re-flashed the card and shut down in terminal and now it works, but the Logout in LXD sends it into a loop. It goes back into the "BIOS". Logging out in Terminal looks more normal because the monitor actually goes blank. Is that normal?
I am posting this from Midori, which does not have problems with Java.

I tried apt-get install thunderbird in Terminal and got a message that "thunderbird" has no installation candidate, which, I assume, means that it is not available for Raspberry. I could download Synaptic, but there was a warning that it was a large download. Perhaps I should flash a 16GB card instead of 4GB that I am using now.

Is there an email app for Raspberry?

Thank you also for advising me not to attempt to connect PS2 Keyboard with a converter. You saved me a trip and much frustration.

Thanks again,

Alex

I'm using Claws Mail connecting via IMAP and this works really fine for me. I suggest you to try it.
