Av Compu Link JVC AVR

since my avr does not have HDMI and CEC
can I connect the pi via gpio to the Av Compu Link ports?
and control the avr?

I could only find forum posts with dead links from 2005 on the subject.
It is probably much easier to use a IR-blaster to simulate the remote.
