Completing mains circuit with relay

Fri May 27, 2016 11:18 am

Hi,

I am a software guy with limited knowledge of electronics doing some experiments on pi.

I have pi3 model B and a 1 channel relay of 5 V. Can I use these 2 to complete a circuit that powers on my TV or Fan or Bulb? I am afraid of burning my pi if i use it with a relay completing a circuit with mains :(

Thank you,
Sachin

If you're not comfortable with electricity you should get something like this http://www.pwrusb.com/index.html
The most important leg of a three legged stool is the one that's missing.
It's called thinking. Why don't you try it sometime?

Echoed. Mains electricity must be treated with respect.

if you connect it correctly, you can complete the mains circuit.
if you connect it wrongly, you can burn your pi3, and also yourself :)

if you are looking for the solution, take something pre-built
if you are looking for experiments, try it with lower voltage/current and at the end connect to mains.
You could build a box with proper connectors to avoid flying mains cables :)

PS: you should also check the relay specs to know if it can work safely with the raspi..

For any project involving mains electricity, you must be familiar with your local electrical regulations, and with the best electrical practice. If your skills are software based and not in electrical engineering, either avoid mains projects, or get a competent local electrician to check your work at every stage -- planning, building, inspection, test -- before switching on the mains.

The cost of getting it wrong can be smoked Pi, house fire, or death. Don't take any risks.
