Anker 60W 6-Port USB Charger for Raspberry Pi 3 cluster?

Fri May 27, 2016 1:38 am

Hello,

I am looking to power 4x Raspberry Pi 3s via USB using an Anker 60W 6-Port Family-Sized Desktop USB Charger with PowerIQ Technology. Does anyone know if this will work?

The exact model/ASIN is B00QTIQ21I and it has great reviews on amazon but I am just not sure if this work.

Looking to run 4x RPi units for some server/client and home network learning fun.

My reason for going with USB instead of a wall charger is due to wall chargers being bulky; anyone out there try this or any expert on the topic able to confirm this for me?

Thank you.

It is rated at 12A so that should be OK for 4 or 5 RPi.
Be sure to get high quality micro USB cables.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be able to power four Pi3's. Each port is rated up to 2.4 amps so you might be pushing it if you are driving high draw usb devices.

On a related note, I saw this Pi cluster blade and though you might be interested since you are driving four Pi's

I've been using one for just that purpose for around a year. Several Pis, some with breadboards or HATs. Seems to work for me.

I got the nice 12" USB cables too.
